England v South Africa, 1st Test Betting Preview

Joe Root England

England and South Africa meet in the first of 4 tests at Lords on Thursday and we take a look at the test and the series from a betting perspective.

England beat South Africa in the ODI and T20’s series 2-1 earlier in the tour and while the squads look very different they certainly carry some form of psychological edge into this test series.

The last time England were in a test match was in India during November/December 2016 when they lost 4-0.  Prior to that they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 and drew 2-2 with Pakistan, both at home.

South Africa won a 3-match series 1-0 in New Zealand in March this year and won 2-1 in Australia towards the end of last year. In between those two series they beat Sri Lanka 3-0 at home.

The sides most recently met in South Africa in the 2015/16 season with England winning the series 2-1 but the Proteas won 2-0 in their tour to England in 2012.

England 6/10

Draw 9/2

South Africa 3/1

Suggested Bet: Series Handicap England -1.5 at 12/10

South African cricket has fallen very quickly into a state of despair and I would be surprised if they can lift themselves to challenge an England team that is a different beast at home. For this bet to arrive I need England to win by at least 2 tests.

England 19/20

Draw 5/2

South Africa 28/10

Suggested Bet: Top Home Batsmen, 1st innings – Joe Root at 5/2

Root is in my opinion one of the top 3 batsmen in the world and the class of this England line up. I expect him to score heavily against South Africa all series.
