This Bold Silvano filly justified cramped odds in her penultimate outing when partnered by Hewitson and taking on all-male opposition and streaking home a 6.25-length winner of the 1400m Sophomore Plate over the course and distance.
This three-time winner – all with Hewitson up – was not disgraced in her subsequent outing with Ryan Munger aboard, as she was a runner-up to the champion filly Madame Speaker in the Breeders Guineas Plate over the same course and distance.
With Hewitson reunited, the combination will be tough to beat.
She will, however, have most to fear in the raider Trip To The Sky (Richard Fourie) out of Justin Snaith’s stable. This son of Trippi was in need of his last run when coming off break after being gelded. He ran on stoutly from last to finish a two-length fifth out of 15 in a 1000m MR 87 Handicap at Kenilworth. With the benefit from that run and stepping up the distance, this one-time winner rates a major threat.
Trainer Vaughan Marshall will be expecting another stout effort from his raider, Deepston (MJ Byleveld), who was a game maiden winner three runs back at Kenilworth over 1400m. Rested for five months, the gelding returned with two encouraging third-placed runs over the same course and distance. He will be fitter this time and should be in the final call.
Another not to be ruled out is trainer Candice Bass-Robinson’s raider Fabian with Aldo Domeyer aboard. This one-time winning son of What A Winter showed marked improvement in his last two runs when equipped with blinkers – more so, in his most recent outing when a 0.75-length runner-up over 1200m at Kenilworth.
Next best are Landela, The Highway Man and Gun Hill.
Champion trainer Greeff should get punters away to a flying start with Foreign Source (Domeyer) in Race 1, a 1000m Maiden Juvenile Plate. Wayne Agrella was aboard in the colt’s first two runs when a runner-up over the course and distance, but with the experience gained from those runs he should be on the mark this time.
The same combination has a bright chance of success in Race 2 with Mendocino who contests a Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) over 1200m. This Gimmethegreenlight filly will be out to recover losses after being heavily backed on debut and finishing a 0.75-length second over 1000m. With that run under the belt she is unlikely to miss this time.
