Bob Faux: good idea. That way, an elitist like me can associate just with my excellent peers and not have to contend with the riff raff! (Seriously...very good idea.)

Umlilo: you are too funny. Americans would giggle at your notion of considering me to be among the elite!

Hibernia: I thought you looked a little like Kirk Douglas! As for verifying identity, I would take people at their word. This is a very small game and there are not all that many players. Should be fairly easy to confirm one's identity.

All of this non-sense aside, is there any one of you out there that doesn't believe that if a person has to post under his own identity that this person would be a) more civil and b) carefully weigh what he posts?

Of course not!

That's my point.

(I am having a great conversation with myself!)

There are two ways to achieve what you guys want: revolution (terrorism) or process (diaglogue). The first doesn't work. The second might. But it can only be achieved if your platform is inviting enough.

And by the way Umlilo, I suggest you try not to stereotype people based on nationality. Certainly a learned man such as yourself must have come across this concept at some point in your education.

@ Barry Irwin:

I certainly have not stereotyped you without justification (like what some posters do about blacks on this forum)! Yes, I studied how one is stereotyped by the Americans, James Bond and the 'others' is relevant; good and evil, with us or not with us; angels and devils....! For hundreds of years, we blacks have been (and still are) stereotyped... go through some of the sarcasm, cynicism and insults on such aspects!

I made my comments on what you revealed voluntarily about yourself- wanting our webbie to impose censorship of sorts that is no different to what your country (America) is practising and guilty of (despite the Statue of Liberty) under the guise of national security.

Add your years of 'experience' that very few of (if any) have. Isn't that self-trumpeting and dictatorial? There are many here who could say the same about themselves... in different fields too!

What was the relevance of your intervention along these lines?

I do not recall any of your comments on / condemnation of the disturbing disclosures regarding the state of the horseracing industry in this country.

You are held in awe because of your great involvement and investment within the industry and obviously interact with the various role players and decision-makers when you in this country.

Like the Arab Sheikh (whose country's human rights record is a disgrace), the red carpet is laid out for you as you are demed an investor in a vital industry, albeit, even giving it the stamp of approval of 'international' stature!

I had credited you for the fact that you are about the only major owner who comes to such forums; none of the others, especially South Africans) like the Kantors, Jooste, Oppenheimers, etc (granted, that's their prerogative!) have,or will ever, do so! Their elitist status cannot stoop to such levels of banality and rustics!

There are serious problems:

1.
Non-accountability, see-saw dividends, nepotism, etc;

2.
The fall in / stagnation of stakes and questionable disciplinary actions against owners & trainers to kick them out of the industry;

3.
The imminent investigation of the entire horseracing industry and its possiblle transfer to the Sports & Recreation Department due to a total lack of transformation, etc.

Is such a situation attendant in your country?

BTW:
This is not the only forum and platform from which those whose views are deemed unpalatable can use or resort to! If the webbie listens to your sage advice and wants us out...so be it!

So, where will this clean up of riff raff from elitist peers end?

Bomb 'em eventually, like Iraq and Afghanistan?

I fear this thread has taken on a life of it's own and thats not quite what I had in mind when I started it. I was actually quite pleased to have my suspicions that far more important people (than we think) actually read these forums, or shall I say the news that gets discussed on here gets back to them somehow.........

That for me is a step in the right direction. Perhaps me wishing for them to come to the table and discuss issues with us is an absolute pipe dream, but hey, I'm a dreamer!!

The main reason why I hope these forums could be a very useful tool in the future is because the internet and the way we use it is constantly evolving. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the viral marketing use of this platform. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to how journalists utilize this tool to disseminate their stories and how corporations use the internet to interact with their customers ect.

For me there is no precedence at the moment that says these forums cannot be a success and that is all I hope for.

Hope we can move in the right direction.

Tommy
it is, as the forum is being read, no doubt, by all. And those who do not read it, hear about it via word on the street. So, for overcoming that mountain of giving a voiceless aspect a voice, well done. And by rights, the 'authorities' should use it to mine data from their market- to know what they think and how they see their product. Well done to the RA, however unfinished, for coming onto the forum directly to deliberate. Hopefully Phum can do the same....not so sure about Gold Circle, they're having major internal difficulties at the moment....
