Result stands in chaotic Wolverhampton contest
STEWARDS held an inquiry into the 2m handicap (5.45) at Wolverhampton, which ended in confusion, after a stricken horse on the track caused the race to be briefly halted.
The incident occurred 3f from home but the race was quickly resumed and was won by Six of Clubs. The stewards opted to let the result stand and the placings remained unaltered.
Sheila's Bond had broken down on the first circuit and was still being attended to on the track as the field came round on the second circuit. The jockeys saw a flag man waving a chequered flag and, according to Shane Kelly, who rode runner-up Carnac, were told "to pull up".
The jockeys obeyed the instruction but then, on passing the broken-down horse, were instructed to race on again, which most of them did.
BHA spokesman Paul Struthers said: "The stewards could not void the race because there were finishers and the stop-race procedure wasn't called correctly.
"The stewards held an inquiry but did not find any of the jockeys in breach due to the understandable confusion. They will forward a report to the BHA which we'll review and decide if any further action needs to be taken."
Victor Chandler said it would pay out on the first, second and third. They also said they would void all other bets.
Most bookmakers paid out on the winner and voided all other bets.Totesport said all bets would stand.
Simon Clare, Coral's spokesman said: "Punters won't suffer from these freakish events that only happen in horseracing."
