That was news to me, too. But then racing in SA has been around for a long time. I once saw a Greyville racecard from 1919, believe it or not. I had to chuckle at the announcement that trams left the City Hall (or somewhere) for the course every 30 minutes, or some such. Trams? When the hell did Durban last have those??? I think you'd need to older than 70 something to remember that.

A very good question as there are very few who can be regarded as famous.The only one that really comes to mind after much soul searching is David Payne.His first runner was a winner at scottsville,a filly ridden by Gary Verne and in his first year of training he inherited that great horse In Full Flight from Mr Fergusin,spelling could be wrong,andlater imigrated to Australia where he has competed fairly well,im not sure whether that has made him famous but for the life of me i cannot think of anyone else
