Help Wanted 1947 Kings Cup Trophy Durban Turf Club
14 years 4 months ago
I have recently bought a silver racing cup with the inscription "The King's Cup donated by the Durban Turf Club to commemorate the visit of their majesties March 1947."Cup has enamelled DTD coat of arms & badge. Also inscribed to the winners "Won by 'Kenya' owner F de Swardt, trainer F.J.Pienaar.This is clearly not the winner of the original Kings Cup.Was this a winner of one of the other races on the day King George VI ,Queen Elizabeth & the 2 princesses visited Greyville race track.Did the King present this trophy?Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks Bruce

KING LEAVES RACES
Crowd Storms I Judge's Box
LONDON, March 23 (A.A.P.). - The King and Queen left the King's Cup meeting at Greyville race- course, Durban, yesterday when the crowd, incensed by a judge's decision, rushed the judge's box, says Reuters correspondent at Durban.
The angry racegoers pulled down the numbers posted by the judge, and put up their own choice.
This took place after the seventh race. The crowd swarmed on to
the track, completely blocking the course.
The King and Queen left, and the meeting was abandoned.
A record crowd saw Chestnut
Hill win the £2,000 King's Cup.
Hi Bruce.....not much help on your query but thought this was rather interesting.....the "clanners" can see that not much has changed....!!!.

Kenya indeed won the King's Cup in 1949- March 26th. Second was Milesia Pride. Kenya went on to finish 10th behind Milesia Pride in the Durban July of the same year.

Can't be of much further help right now, guys, as I'm lying in a hospital bed in Durbs, after a piece of steak got lodged in my gullet. Not the most pleasant procedure to remove it - real science fiction stuff, with probes and grabbers, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But back to the King's Cup. Yes, I do remember reading about the riot, which was not the only one at around that time. There was an even worse one at Clairwood when jockeys and horses got injured after the crowd stormed the track during a race, and let rip at the field with whatever they could lay their hands on. It was before my time, I hasten to add, but I will try to get more facts. That Kings Cup day trophy probably won't be that valuable, Bruce, as it was obviously for a minor race, but they handed out really decent trophies in those days and I'm sure it has aesthetic appeal. Not sure what the market is like overseas for memorabilia relating to Royalty and it's worth checking.

Get well soon my friend, you should have been eating seafood in Durbs, not steak.

It actually happened in Cape Town the night before, Dave, but seafood should have been the bill of fare, as you say. Out of hospital, now, and on the mend.
