A great post and here is my story, have had my fair share of winners and when I took bets as a bookie Space Walk was my best after the objection I found myself in the position to instal a pool and entertainment centre

My biggest win as a punter was Flaming Rock which is also my fav racehorse after Mill Reef.

I have deleted the losers and left the times I won the July and hope IGUGU can join my winners

2004 Greys Inn 4 Anthony Delpech Mike de Kock backed this one
2003 Dynasty 4 Robbie Fradd Dean Kannemeyer this was a great winner with draw etc and had a big bet
1998 Classic Flag 4 Anthony Delpech David E. Ferraris a good winner for scotia was at the quins when we brought the roof down
1996 London News 4 Piere Strydom Alec G. Laird also won and striker kept it going for me
1994 Space Walk 6 Robbie Fradd M. H. "Ricky" Maingard a great result when I was a bookie
1991 Flaming Rock 4 Karl Neisius R. Chris Snaith a great result had a massive ew and a great finish
1990 Ilustrador 4 Felix Coetzee Terence M. Millard a star backed in all the lead up races
1988 Royal Chalice 4 Felix Coetzee Terence M. Millard another winner for me in a good July spell
1985 Gondolier 6 W. Harvey M. P. Antelme was given this from my boss Zim connections
1984 Devon Air 5 Felix Coetzee Terence M. Millard the Mare from UK superb win and a good bet
1978 Politician 5 Bertie Hayden Sydney C. Laird my first win on the July

2005 Dunford go me interested at 50/1 - I had read Robert Bloombergs comments in the SP and when the funny little horse won, I thought "Wow this is easy!"

2006 Picked Eyeofthetiger but the price was not too exciting for the R50 wins punter

2007 Hunting Tower cemented it - I was at the course and the experience was awesome.

2008 Bombed - Talked myself into Buy and Sell and Desert Links - They redeemed themeselves in a Champions Cup and Gold Cup Double

2009 Bombed - BCL blind sided me - Thought Kapil was the winner this year

2010 Bombed - I remember commenting on this forum along the lines of "Jockey got a fright and nearly showed his hand in the Champions Cup" re Bold Silvano - went for Lizarre only due to the stable change and watching USO the morning before the race - big mistake.

2011 ??? I sence that Igugu may be a better 3 year old than her male counterparts but I am waiting for this weekend before I make a decision. She has had a hard campaign whilst some strong older horses have had a soft lead up to the big race.

Hunting Tower was my best July winner . Remember taking dbls and trebles onto him that totaled about 70k . I asked the part owner of Glen and Sepel in Bruma 2 months before the race and he said Hunting Tower RACE OVER . My dad and cousins also had a good bet on race day , if I remember correctly it paid R12.00 some change on the tote .

My favorite July winner was Ipi Tombe, had a big punt on her and going through the 300 meter couldn't see how she could win from where she was before bursting between runners to get up on the line.

Like Ant the July hasn't been a lucky race for me only backing London News, Classic Flag and Ipi Tombe, hopefully Igugu can make it four winners.

Correct, he was killed in a road accident heading back to the Cape.

In other news...yes, Teal was the little horse with a big heart, and Basil Marcus has never won the July as either a jockey or a trainer.

Can remember telling my father as a 7yo to back Gondolier and that was my first taste of racing and the bug has stuck ever since. My first time going to the tote and taking a bet for the July by myself was in 1991 when i backed Olympic Duel but that got beat by the mighty Flaming Rock. It will take me 11 years before I backed a July winner but along the way i came agonizingly close with Sleek Machine (1996 - Winner London News - Dougie Whyte just couldnt reel in the winner after London News skipped clear turning for home), Faralmond (1998 - Winner Classic Flag), Young Rake (2000 - Winner El Picha - Still cant believe Kevin Shea got beat in that photo !!!!!!!!!!!).

The year 2002 and Kevin Shea will get sweet revenge. Ipi Tombe lands the July and bring me and Mike de Kock our first July winner (Only realized the filly got up 20 seconds after the race). Will never forget that feeling as my late girlfriend was with me in the racecourse. It was a super fantastic win for me as that bring memories of my first July winner and sharing it with someone special who is in heaven now. A truly cherishing moment for me now under circumstances.

After that pulled of a double with Dynasty but that July winner eludes again after coming close with Sushisan (2006 - Winner Eyeofthetiger - Still made a packet with the swingers and trifecta).

Been to the racecourse for the July from 1995 and have all the July racecards safely stored (Its going to be worth a fortune 1 day lol). My July sojourn will start early this year as I will have to fly down for the big one as I now work in Joburg (Wont miss it for a thing - Tickets already booked). Nothing beats the July atmosphere. It has all the thrills, the intrigue, the disappointment and I told you so stories.

So see your'll on racecourse come 2 July and has for the Winner, watch this space !!!!!!!!!!

When Model Man ran second to Bush telegragh in 1987, giving away 8 kgs I was hooked ever since...

The only winner I ever backed in the July was Dunford in 2005, but I feel bad when I think about it as Rabiya broke down during that race...

Last year I liked Fabiani (surprise!) but ran 7th...I managed to get the Pick 3 (Race 6, 7 and 8) on the day though which paid R7,777 (Gold Onyx, Bold silvano and Mighty Atom :)

In 2009 I got 1% of the quartet (which paid over R400k)

2006, 2007 and 2008 were terrible for me, as I liked African Appeal, Buy and Sell, and Eddington :(

Hopefully I can winner no 2 this year (holds thumbs for Black Wing, Run for it, and.......Lion in Winter lol}
