Champions made me cry--a one off experience as an adult.
Phar Lap was very good I thought.
I wish somebody would make a racing movie of the quality of Chariots of Fire. That would be something to see!

What a wow thought! an equine Chariots of Fire! Now there's a movie I can watch over and over ... great music too. Get the best of the Brits to make a horse movie, that's a plan ... they are the best and can express strong feelings in a flick without making it all mushy and o.t.t.
Ah well, I am allowed to dream, I hope.
Did any of you see the original movie of National Velvet? Ugh! I loved the book and still do, but the film just used the title and changed everything else, and were especially careful to delete anything that might mean something. Though I did get one good laugh out of it at least, imagining a buxom busty 15-y-o Elizabeth Taylor trying to pass herself off as a male jockey. Ridiculous!

The Black Stallion is so lame, they didn't even use a Thoroughbred for the star! Gimme a break.
It was an unbelievably beautifully shot movie, but the racing part was pure nonsense.

Mavoureen, my ex-mother-in-law actually instructed Elizabeth Taylor in riding for National Velvet. One thing about the movie, some of the scene were nicely shot. But the story was pure Hollywood.
My hero in life is the American author J. D. Salinger and one of the reasons is that he never allowed his great first novel "The Catcher in the Rye" to be made into a movie because a) he loved his hero too much and b) he recognized that film and fiction were two different art forms.

I went to see The Green Mile because I thought it was about horse racing?

Certainly film and Salinger's fiction are two different art forms, agreed. I can't see "Catcher in the Rye" translating too well into a movie. Occasionally though (just now and then) one does see a book that you would think would be 100% hopeless as a movie, filmed ... and it works. "84 Charing Cross Road" is one example: read the book, seen the film, loved them both ... but (sorry Scotia!) I'm getting off topic now ... 'pologies all.
Maybe I'll watch this Secretariat movie tonight, at least for a while. We horse lovers are desperate for anything that might appease our craving.
