Hi All!

A reminder that the DTI Portfolio Committee is to have hearings on horseracing on Wednesday 23 November 2011 on the Gambling Review, which observed, inter alia,

'Animal Racing: Horse racing in SA not be given any policy or statutory protection or any preferential treatment.'

You can email your comments for attention of Nthabiseng Masilo at - NMasilo@thedti.gov.za and to the Private Secretary: ifick@thedti.gov.za

What's to lose?

Horseracing is very low on their list and very few are even knowledgeable about its intricacies.

Besides, it's only the operators that have been making representations..... no punters, breeders, owners, bookies, etc.

I am given to understand that the hearings were postponed and are subject to an enquiry into the entire horseracing industry.

Points on transformation put to the committee were rebuffed by Mr C Simoto of the SA Grooms' Association.

Mention was also apparently made that this is not a racist thing but a question of nepotism, arrogance and non-accountability that affects the rest of the stakeholders within the industry.... black and white.

Some might be happy about this - if true. Those with agendas. However, racing will survive!

@Homer:

It is true! Even an enquiry into the Grooms' Fund has been mentioned!

Cannot agree less with you!

Yes, there are those with hidden agendas who indulge in duplicity. There are also those whose livelihoods depend upon how transparent, accountable, accommodating and representative the industry is. Many have already lost their jobs (you remember all those familiar faces at Turffontein and Newmarket..... caterers, doormen, cleaners, white, Indian, African and Coloured tellers, etc?)

If you taking a swipe at me; I have been consistent..... I have no hidden agenda except the interests of the sport for everyone!

A parallel development is: at the two-day sports indaba, the horseracing situation was brought to the attention of certain SASCOC officials. An enquiry is being mooted as to SASCOC's 5% stake in Phumelela.

Interesting days ahead?

Some interesting new facts (not feelings or agendas - yes facts) in Sporting Post by John Freeman on the type of 'racing people' we have. And they all claim to have racing at heart - lol! Well done John for giving us the real facts for this enquiry.B)-

There will always be those as described by John Freeman, and hopefully parties will be able to respond to whatever allegations arise.
I can't say that I would be unhappy to see a total investigation and disclosure of the whole co-mingling disaster......I am convinced that we have never been told all the facts!
I also hope that the issue of regulation is addressed.
Interesting times ahead .
