The Mean Machine - Fotheringham, Pollock, Kevin Mckenzie, Lee Irvine, Ray Jennings - think that game I was talking about was at Newlands - wasn't' David Dyer the opener (or did he come after) - there was always this joke going around about Dyer going into bat and then his wife phones - 'sorry he just went out to bat' - 'that's OK, I'll hold on'
Nowadays the 'Lion's' bowlers would struggle to make a lot of high school first teams :S

Frodo I remember that game well. They use to start on a Friday, play the saturday, (Sondag GEEN SPORT) and finish the game on the Monday. Newlands were packed from Lunchtime on and Castle corner were a famous 'kuier-gat' Was it not Rob Drummond the wicky he bowled? Not sure

You could be right, I just remember it was the keeper and Ricey bowled him with the last ball of the match - I think they had to bowl 15 overs in the last hour in those days - or was it 20? And they had bonus points - one bonus point for every 2 wickets up to 8 wickets and then another for the 9th wicket (use to be the 10th wicket, but the batting captains often declared at '9 down' to deny the opposition the extra point) and 1 point for every 25 runs scored after 150 - but it had to be in 80 or 85 overs - nice memories (tu)

frodo also the gillette cup limited overs matches were always close and the crowds would flock into all the grounds. I remember one final when WP were up against Natal and both teams "ran out" players by means of the bowler running out the non facing batsman following up. It caused a massive stir. I think that it was Peter Kirsten and Paddy Clift who were the unlucky batsman. All the finals were played in joburg.

I used to bunk school after lunchtime on a friday and go down to newlands and spend the whole day there on the saturday as well. we used to sit in front of the oakes and then jump over the fence so that we could sit in the oakes. We dare not leave until the end of the days play as you had to show your ticket stub and the blokes at the gates were very strict. As i got older I progressed to castle corner where the beer just flowed relentlessly. I spent many a saturday half comatosed there.

Talking about jumping over the fence - when I was still in primary school my dad had a season ticket at Ellis Park - he used to take me with on a Saturday afternoon - went in through the little gate to the season ticket holders' seats and then walked along the low fence for twenty yards or so (away from the 'gatekeeper's' watchful eye) - and then handed me the match program - inside which was his season ticket - they clipped the tickets at the entrance gate and not the season ticket holders' gate - so I watched many a game using this method (tu)

Here's a cricketing trivia. This memory seems to stick to my mind. ( I might be totally off the mark)
Alan Border retired from the game. His last game was in SA . ( a test match I think).
The question - which South African player bowled the last over to him.
