Not sure what the release date will be, at this stage, because the general history of racing and breeding, as commissioned by the TBA, has taken precedence over the individual horse profiles, many of which have been edited or part edited. But the history side is huge and will run to several hours of viewing, taking audiences right back to the early days of racing and breeding at the Cape. It's fascinating stuff, but has been a mountain to climb.

I know I'm a bit longer in the tooth than you are Dave, but I'm still enjoying being involved and have quite a bucket list to get through.. But Aidan is very much in charge of the project now and is in the Cape, doing final research, for script completion, before he films some re-creations of important historical moments for which there are no pics, paintings or film footage. Even Jan Van Riebeeck gets a look in - he imported the first Batavian ponies to the Cape, which became the ancestors of the early racing stock and which figured in the pedigrees of most SA-bred racehorses right up until the mid 1800's. It was then that the pioneer Eastern Cape breeder, Charles Southey, of Culmstock Stud, realised that our horses would never be world class until they were bred from totally thoroughbred stock, and he began to import thoroughbred mares from the UK. By the early 20th century there were SA horses like Camp Fire II, owned by Sir Abe Bailey, winning top races on the British turf. The role of the Randlords, like Bailey, the Joel brothers and Henry Nourse, who established the biggest thoroughbred racehorse stud operation in the world, are dealt with at length in the documentary, and Aidan has uncovered some fascinating historical footage and filmed extensively on the studs they once owned.

I have to agree with the sentiment that there is a distinct difference between an advertorial and an show purporting to be unbiased and merely sponsored by an advertiser...................one is deceptive!

somebody has to pay for the make of the show..who cares who it is as long as it is made and shown - to create an interest in racing.

no I meant in the light of racing getting no media coverage nor press coverage and having a severe lack of general public awareness in SAF, anything is good no matter how much it even leans towards blatant advertising. Of course having to listen to a heavy drumming on about a sponsor's product is boring but I do understand that it is a necessary evil.
Perhaps it will encourage more sponsors? I don't know.
