Plate races have nothing to do with merit ratings. As pointed our already, the rules regarding races like novice and graduation plates were changed maybe a couple of years ago now to drop a horse's mass by 0.5 kg for each unplaced run since its last placed run, although I think that this excludes unplaced runs in Graded and Listed races. It wouldn't matter if Laurie's Gold was rated 107, 87, or 67. He carries 59.kgs, getting one kilo off the "base" 60 kgs for his two unplaced runs in a row.

With regard to that drop in weight in a novice.....why incentivise a strategy of a few bad runs to set up a good bet.........a completely braindead concept bearing in mind the general perception of racing by the public.
For instance No4 Big Bird............are the programmers saying that,at 3yrs old and after only 8 runs, the horse has lost ability?........bollocks..........it had a saddle slip FFS.
A lot of strange logic applied to this game.

I have never agreed with those "new" plate race rules, either. It rather torpedoes the concept of racing on level terms, which is essentially what novice and graduation plates were supposed to be about. But our operators can bastardise anything for the sake of trying to grow field sizes.

But then you still use the merit rating (if you agree with the official rating) for a guide, make your selections in the plate race??
