As magic said that Variety Club is out of a sprinting damline La Massine where as Princess of Light damline Star of Arcole has produced all stayers (Arcola, etc) and her mother Arcole was a stayer to. I must have been 9yrs then but i think Arcole might have won a Gold Cup or Gold Vase for Terrence Milllard. These sprint sires can throw in the odd one that stays. I remember Harry Hotspur producing the mare Danseuse Classique the winner of the Natal Oaks and placed in the Gold Cup so Variety Club could be the odd one.

Marcus has got to know the horse very well recently and joey has won the derby before so I'm sure if either of them thought the horse wasn't gonna stay they wouldn't of ran him, imo he is one of the best three year olds in the country and they wouldn't run him so soon if they don't feel he has a big chance, I'm going balls to the wall variety club

Danseuse Classique and Princess of Light were out of staying mares. People sometimes forget that horses also have two parents.

I'm not saying Variety Club cannot win but I believe it will be hard for him to do so. He is going to have to be something special to win a 1 1/4 mile race not only on his breeding, his conformation as well as his style of racing.......However I also thought it would be hard for Jay Peg to win the race on his style of running (and i still believe he was best up to 1 mile to 1/8 mile). Also Floatyourboat (won on objection) was not a true 2000m horse but he managed to win.
So, this brings me to my initial conclusion. The race will be decided by the pace unfortunately. If Variety Club can be afforded an easy lead in front he could kick clear and steal the race. If the race is run at a solid pace then I believe Jackson could emulate his daddy and not only win the Derby but do so in record breaking time. (Dynasty ran the fastest Derby in recent memory I believe)
Going to be a humdinger, but not for the first time will be won with tactics and not necessarily the best horse over the distance!!
Just my 3.25 cents worth!!

How foolish of them to forget that

Good analysis, Tommy. I don't see much speed in the Derby field. Variety Club may be a freak of nature and is descended from the SA Oaks winner Novenna, but I'm leaning towards Jackson. I'm not saying that he's as talented as his daddy, but he has won over much less than 2000m and Dean Kannemeyer has always believed Dynasty could have won over 1200m.

Jackson will shit in!!! This horse is a champion!! Can win from any draw!!!! Last time out at kennilworth he was only 65percent ready and still made a mockery of what at the time seemed to be a very good field...."Obviously not" !! Jackson all the way!! Will back him at any price!!

Now" any price" would appear a bit over the top, I also fancy but has some serious competition, what price do you expect it to be?

"We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
I'm goin' to Jackson, I'm gonna mess around,
Yeah, I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town".
