I'm not boosting or punting any runner. I simply want to caution all of us ( myself included ) on the following old, old lessons which we often need to be re-taught.
Very, very few horses win Grade 1 races having suffered interrupted preparation. This should not be confused with horses that come back from long layoffs and win unexpectedly. The difference is that there was not necessarily any interruption in their recovery and/or rehabilitation; they simply had long layoffs.
On this basis Igugu needs to be treated with caution.
The Cape Flying : In my experience weight means almost nothing over 1000m. Which is why WFA races over sprint distances often lead punters into incorrect conclusions in subsequent handicaps over the minimum distance.
What do appear to make enormous differences are the following :
Gatespeed - horses who jump smartly win plenty of 1000m events even when they are stopping in the last furlong.
Wind - it changes the effective distance.
Going - it turns it into a different race.
Given all of the above I am going to make a few observations which SHOULD NOT be construed as recommendations or tips :
IGUGU - Interrupted preparation. Has she ever won at Kenilworth? Needs to travel. Horrible price and facing a field of live contenders.
JJ - 1000m ? Hmmmm. May need a head wind. Will probably get it!
WAW - 1000m ? Is it really his best distance? How sharp is his starting?
VDR - Distance suited. Very convincing at Turffontein.
As one wise old racing man once told me : If you consistently rubbish every horse you will be right more often than not!
To which I replied : Or become a bookmaker!

Was there a headwind blowing at Durbanville when Empress Club beat Taban and Marie Galante over 1000m @ Durbanville in course record time?

Other than the headwind from the record crowd shouting her home I don't think so.
