imvho
the "problem" with some of the trainers today is the lack of understanding the merit rating system. People (craig included) have said "they dont have the stock" well not having horses rated 102 does not mean you cant win races with horses rated 64! all it means is you have to accept that the majority of races are now handicaps and you better off reviewing your strategy with your stock. I ALSO dont think that the handicaller helps, for example a woodruff horse wins on debut and its backed off the boards, it wins by 5 lengths beating madam madonna. UNDER no circumstance should that horse be rated (at that point) 85. BUT the handicapper often overrates these horses and then when they step out next time they found wanting.
Training horses for handicaps is an art, if a horse has the maximu ability of 88 IT MAKES no sense to win often and make his rating so high that he cant be competative. You need to be coy with him and place him correctly AND of course the handicapper need to play his part as well.

Easy as you say unless you have a champion you have to be careful where you run. Handicappers must also not or actually stop over rating 2yr olds.I had a filly win a bad race in the heavy in May and they rated her 83. I stood no chance again so we sold her a little later. 12 months and about 12 races later she was a 37. Never won again and one 5th.Killed her in one hit!

if she won a 1200 in may as a 2yo the wfa is 19 pounds..so if she was an 83 then with the wfa she becomes a net 64..thats what she would be weighted off in handicaps..hardly seems like a high rating for a winner in a major centre..the average is higher

I think where she ended up proved she was never that high. 1x 5th in 13 or so Hcp runs after winning! That was with 2 trainers so we both could not have been wrong.

Craig, with respect, if she ended a 37 and still couldn't win she must have gone horribly backwards. If the handicappers had simply overrated her and she'd kept her level of ability, she'd have reached a point long before 37 where she would have been competitive again. In the circumstances there is no way that her long term career was killed in one hit.

I am going to burst a blood vessel soon with this NETT merit shyte. The MR is the MR is the MR :X ... I have asked before and never received an answer... when the horse turns three and the WFA is different does EVERY NEW THREE YEAR OLD GET THEIR MR"s ADJUSTED DOWN BY the WFA difference?? Of course not. WFA's is a condition of a race not an MR thaang..{stomps off to find a big vicious dog to kick... stops at door to barf into Chekers bag}
