For Purists: Watching Horse Racing is to purists what F1 is to motor racing fans

For the not so pure: The bet makes the horse racing game exciting

The difference between F1 and Horseracing is funding. F1 is funded by the advertisers hence the labelling of everything that can possibly be labbled including the drivers gear (opportunity for horse racing here?). Horse racing is funded mostly by gambling like it or not. Unfortunately gamblers are pigeonholed as the "old man with a smoke" and the industry perpetuates this perception and treats these funders with contempt. It seems as though Gamblers in horse racing are the necessary evil that should be seen but not heard!

I think that Garricks piece, as with all of his writings, is perfect. It pushes buttons and gets people to think and respond. Nothing wrong with opinion. This forum is what its name suggests Africanbettingclan "the Voice of the South African Punter", so therefore his view or any other might not be to everyones taste but they are certainly welcome IMO.

I didn't day Garrick's view wasn't welcome. I was only saying that not everyone is in racing for the punting.

Magic my comment wasn't aimed at you in particular it was aimed at BI's comment and the chorus. The meat of my post wasn't meant to attack anyway, it was to highlight how different stakeholders view things. It seems that sometimes opinion is met with impatience hence my comment "Gamblers in horse racing are the necessary evil that should be seen but not heard!" This is the meat of the post.

Dunford July 2005 R50.00 for R1,500, the challenge of beating all the conspiracies, perceptions and realities, and the foolish notion that I will land a bomb pick 6 is the reason for my love of the game. It certainly has nothing to do with waking up one moning and choosing horse racing as my number one spectator sport.

The difference between today and 1964 imo is that we live in age of instant gratification. We long for nothing. Its served up wirelessly in our homes as and when we want it. Maybe this is the reason why the operators strategy is to serve the gynea chair racing and all the other crap. Its to serve the instant gratification need and not the purists needs. Gamblers are only gamblers to feed this instant gratification need. Hence even one of our very own posters has lost interest for the 80 and 90 minutes of Rugby and soccer in favour of the 57 seconds to 5 minute horse race.

For me horseracing is equally exciting and intense as Bubba Watson vs Louis Oosthuisen in the Masters playoff. Is it this way for the public at large? Probably not. A few simple ways to change this is to change perceptions, make racing "cool" and for new entrants to have a couple of good big wins. none of these are easy to achieve.

If you a racing purist..watching the Champs , up and coming Champs and jockeys rides then it isn't boring..if you just bet and watch the last 10 metros of the race it must be very boring
