Well just when I was getting all excited - why did you find it a 'very poor game'?

Is Derby Fevel still available while undergoing the facelift?

Track King is completely unrealistic. Nothing about the game, other than seeing some animated races, feels like it has any basis in horse racing at all. It has bizarre league structures to it, completely unlike racing anywhere that I know of. Even the races are strange, horses finishing hundreds of lengths apart constantly. I also found that there was very little community spirit in the game and my pixel nags were usually racing against computer controlled opposition.

Derby Fever is very much a sim, trying to emulate racing while still being a game. It is US-created and based so it has a US style, but many players from around the world have managed to have an influence to give it a more global focus. The developer is also been very approachable, open to suggestions from the player base for improvement, re-rating of sires etc.

Yes, Derby Fever is still available to play. All you need is an e-mail address per stable you open (max 10 horses per stable, no limit to stables). There is a bit of a learning curve to the game (the same is true for Track King), and it takes probably 2 or 3 days for a stable to get added after applying, but that's it. I guess everyone will have their own preference, so it might be worth trying both, but for me it's not even a contest.

One caveat is that it can be very frustrating breeding horses with SAf pedigrees and repeatedly getting hacks that can barely make their way around the track, but that is slowly changing. I used to joke that my sim Jet Master's raced on 3 legs but I recently managed, for example, to get Silvano, Elliodor, and Northern Guest re-rated to at least a respectable level.
