Pardon me for sounding heartless but I would much rather see a 'useless' ( not my description ) racehorse euthenased then end up pulling a cart or any number of the other poorly supervised activities that might befall the animal.

Fact is - these animals are bred to race and very little else outside of becoming hacks or shouwjumpers. They are very expensive to keep and totally unsuited to taking care of themselves given that they are supervised and cared for 24/7 during their racing careers.

There is nothing particularly romantic about the welfare aspect of this sport once the sales organisations have packed away their gavels and finished trying to persuade you into parting with wads of cash for an animal of unproven ability. Likewise there is no comment on the dozens of unsold yearlings, barren or aged mares and failed stallions.

As I have stated to the point of boredom : The whole industry is EXPLOITATIVE and the only people defending it are usually those maiking their livings out of it. In a world of increasing instant communication this is certainly one of the reasons why the sport continues to come under scrutiny and lose its appeal to many out there.

Now I'm going back to my steroid drip..............
