People are prepared to pay to see good racing.
Royal Ascot admission price to the Grandstand next month GBP 60 Tuesday and Wednesday and GBP 71 Thursday Friday and Saturday. At R13 to the GBP the cheapest is R 780 yet there will be daily crowds at the meeting in excess of 30 000 per day.
The quality of racing is simply outstanding, with nearly £4 million in prize money on offer and a total of eighteen Group 1 races over the five days. Attracting the worlds best horses, this year is set to be even more exhilarating with the presence of the mighty Black Caviar, who has consecutively won her last 21 races!

Racing administrators are of various kinds.
The typical kind thinks it is his job to fill the pitch with sand and oil the start boxes and that's it. He lives way back in the fifties.
The keen administrator is aware that times has changed. Racing is globalized and his customers may even be situated out of the country.
He also does n't slash prices thinking we have some plants in our houses that grow euros/rands/roubles/kapiks.
Some are keen party enthousiasts.
In Greece everytime the socialist part hold a rally, they have lots of people and fireworks and the streets are filled with joyous supporters.
Not unnatural for a big party, but watch what happens when the tv station controller decides to show a plan from the feet of the platform where the speaker is about to stand. You guessed it. All the race course officionados are right there, with their little flags !
In UK they go for the queen to Ascot.
Ascot opening race (from My Fair Lady):
The fields at Ascot are sometimes 50-55, like cavalry charge.

There was 24 644 paying punters at Chester on saturday on a normal days racing, infact there was only 3 horses rated in treble figures.
Prizemoney for the whole card was only £77 000 and there was another 6 meetings taking place on the same day.

hibs i remember 30 year ago we go to race on only wednesday or the saturday. then you must pay to go in but its not a lot i think 5 OR 10 rand, may be this is less. any of those days there is 15000 plus people on the track. at one time if the racing is on then the off course totes they close at 1pm i think and if you want bet you go to the bookies or the track. those days are much better than the shit we have to day
