and i think all you dumpy slaggers are biased picking on an easy target .... he is better than at LEAST 60% of other commentators bearing in mind that he deals with 9 races a day of maximum fields...

Come on guys it's Dumpy's livelihood. His been calling for AGES and how many spot on calls hasn't he made ? Nobody is perfect and his calling big fields and angles can catch any man out. The UK guys are different division but often say " Close ! Maybe so and so but let's leave it to the judge...". Meanwhile the winner won it a half length. It's easy criticizing at the line from home but Alan has had to watch the whole field throughout the race and it ain't easy. The man has called thousands of close finishes RIGHT in his time and is PE racing. He may get slated here, which can only dent his confidence further but he also has plenty fans. Harsh words unbeknown to those typing em may be putting a really good guy under pressure he doesn't deserve after decades of service to the game.

Chainsaw, I have a lot of respect for you. For one, when I am in SA and watching the TV I hear you time and time again tell "the guys" to get something right and the tone of your voice is often one of sheer and utter frustration. To many of us, Dumpy is the same. And I am sure I have heard you having to correct him. You talk of his livelihood but how many winning tickets have been thrown away over the years because of his wrong calls? I dread to think. And we could be talking huge accumulators... I did say could!

He may have given years of service but I have seen many a quote from many years back saying he has always been the same. How many races a week does he commentate on? How long has he been experiencing the angles etc about which you speak? And the UK comparison, no disrespect but, behave... they may say "leave it to the judge" but they at least call the right horses for the judge to decide on 99.9% of the time. I simply can't agree with you... it is about professionalism and surely Dumpy has enough time in the week to learn the colours etc etc and has been in the game long enough to know the angles etc etc...

As I have said before, listen to William Hill radio commentators who are sometimes calling 2 or 3 meetings a day (maybe 13-21 races in a day, I repeat... a day... and then compare. I'm sorry but Dumpy is not professional enough and if he is professional enough then he simply is not good enough. Confidence has got nothing to do with it, after 30 (?) years you get it right or you haven't been doing it right and you are still not doing it right. A loyal defence sir but imho, very much misplaced... if SA racing is not to be criticised it must improve in so many areas and commentating is definitely one. If you want to help Dumpy... then rather than defend him here I would be promoting the idea of getting better camera angles :)

Other than this, I think you talk a lot of sense and you do your best to improve all matters where you feel you can have an influence! (tu)

You have such a good heart Chain but your loyalty is misplaced - Would you be so forgiving if he was a Swedish caller? He truly is very poor at his job - The test is would you employ a new caller that made as many errors as he does per day? He must hold the record for calling the most incorrect winners (and sometimes calling horses that are not even in THE RACE!!)

I like him. He reminds me of 'Spiekeries'. You must remember that he call's the biggest fields in SA . Most of the fields are 14 or more. (tu)

OR... you are of course entitled to like him :) but please don't fall into that trap regarding the size of the fields... it is about professionalism... it is his job... it is what he is paid to do and he is paid (albeit from what I hear a pittance) to do it correctly. I have to be honest, I don't care if the fields are 5 or 25, you have to know your stuff before each race. And I can't believe he does not have the time in a week to 'learn" it. That to me is the be all and end all of it.
