“Gauteng Provincial Government had several reasons for wanting to run the Sansui Summer Cup a week later, notably that on its traditional date it clashed with the Metro FM awards,” said Phumelela Sales Executive Clyde Basel.

The fucking thing is being held in Nelspruit.Mpumalanga
Press release

Nelspruit - South Africa's Metro FM Awards will be without a home this year if a private sponsor doesn't come forward to help host the event at the Mbombela stadium in Mpumalanga's capital.

The provincial government has decided it doesn't have enough money to foot the more than R11m bill for hosting the event.

"I can let the cat out of the bag. We will have difficulties hosting the Metro Awards (this year) unless we get private sector players to come and help," said economic development, environment and tourism MEC Norman Mokoena on Wednesday.

Mokoena, who was speaking at a press briefing at the Emnotweni arena, said the provincial government would now prioritise key service delivery issues.

"That is where the money will go," he said.

'Tourism promotion'

Last year both the Mpumalanga government and the South African Broadcasting Corporation boasted that Mbombela and the province will be the permanent home of the Metro FM Awards.

In 2010, the provincial government spent a staggering R11.4m on the awards.

When I used to be an appie punter the Holdiay Inns (nee?, nee?, nee Summer Cup) used to be held on the first Saturday of December. Then the whoever sponsors moved it because it clashed with the Million Dollar Golf. But isn't the golf still scheduled?

Again, as an appie punter, the Met used to be run on the 3rd Sat of January. I can remember that because that's the week of my birthday. Then it was moved to the 4th Sat of Jan cos the authorities felt sorry for the punters who ran out of money.

Well guys, for more than a century, the Epsom Derby used to be run on the first Wednesday of June.

Tounge in cheek comment but one that has to raise questions on the knock on effect on the July. The big question for me is; was this another unilateral decision taken by the P almighty without consultation with one of the primary stakeholders, trainers and of course was their partner Gold Circle consulted?

If you try to accomodate every event you will never run the race. Now it clashes with the Nedbank Golf Challenge. What do the Metro Awards for music have to do with racing. :S

For the best drivers and conductors ?

I remember a lad in the States kept throwing people of his bus and killed them, each time we got electric chair and nothing happened?
The rules are that he was set free, in his last interview after the 3rd death, he was asked if he could explain it?

He says.............

I guess I am just a bad conductor......

Mac - You are right. Fixtures have been shuffled quite often during the time that I have followed racing. The Queens Plate used to be run AFTER the Met whilst the Cape Of Good Hope Derby also used to be run quite late in the season towards the end of February.

The only issue which slightly bothers me is this : There have been rumours circulating for quite some time that the sponsors' continued participation in the race was under threat due to issues regarding alcohol marketing etc. If they were to be forced to withdraw would we see another change in the date to accomodate the 'needs' of a new sponsor?

No Pirate's you missing the point. How will P get their quota of black celebs to the event if the Metro Awards are on? This is not intended to be a racial slant it is more a comment on a fake reality (much the same as BBEEE fronting is in business).

Why, you want to go?:D

Fark, hope it does not clash with Egoli (or paint drying!)

PS I think it's for the Metro that has the highest paid mayor...suspended of course...
