Plenty of racing and the start of the July Festival from Newmarket, can`t have a bet with the unseasonable weather..

But if you look hard enough you might find a soft horse performer with a cryptic clue

Ryan Moore's verdict on his rides at Newmarket today.

13.20 Newmarket
Valiant

On official marks we have something to find with Ascot third Rewarded and Lingfield Derby Trial runner-up Shantaram. Shantaram is a horse I like and I would be prepared to ignore his below-par maiden win here last time and make him the one to beat on his second to Main Sequence. But Valiant overcame greenness to win at Newbury on his debut for Joseph and then I got on him for his York handicap win off 86 last time. It wasn't at all easy there as I had to get after him from the start after he missed the kick - it didn't surprise me at all to be told he went to nearly 50-1 in running on Betfair - but he kept finding and in the end won well. I wouldn't want the ground to dry out too much for him, as he is clearly lazy and a bit of juice will probably always suit. But he is improving and the step up to 1m5f will be in his favour, being a Galileo. It is the step up in class that may be the problem, but he doesn't have that much to find. He could well develop into a Cup horse but this race will tell us more.

13.50 Newmarket
Gale Force Ten

This looks a hotter July Stakes than usual; in fact it as hot as I can remember one being. We have a Windsor Castle runner-up in Alhebayeb, a Coventry Stakes fourth in Sir Prancealot who is rated better than he showed there, and an arguably unlucky Norfolk Stakes 5th in Ahern. As well as Italian Group 3 winner Chilworth Icon, unexposed winners like Birdman and my mount Gale Force Ten. Along with Sir Prancealot, he probably comes into this race with the strongest piece of form on his ¾ length second to Reckless Abandon in the Norfolk - the winner is a good horse - and we know the step back up to 6f, over which he won at The Curragh, will suit. I obviously have a decent chance but this will clearly take a lot of winning.

14.25 Newmarket
Stature

As you would expect, this looks a red-hot handicap; historically, it is one of the toughest handicaps of the season to win. And when you are looking at any decent handicap this season your eyes are immediately drawn to the John Gosden runner. And Nabucco's defeat of Guarantee at Windsor last time was boosted when the runner-up won a decent Newbury maiden next time and he is certainly bred to be better than his mark of 88. I rode the sixth in that Windsor race and Nabucco looks well handicapped to me. But everyone else just has to get on with it! And my mount Stature did well to win at Windsor, the front two pulling clear of the third, and hopefully will go well under his 6lb penalty. But he may be running for a place at best here, with the likes of Greek War and Fennell Bay obvious dangers, too.

15.00 Newmarket
Fiorente

There is no getting away from it. As yet, Fiorente hasn't progressed as we would have hoped this season. And things don't get any easier in this company, with the likes of Red Cadeaux and Jakkalberry, horses I know well, in opposition. But he travelled well for a long way in the Hardwicke at Ascot last time and I wouldn't be in a rush to rule him out here as he is a horse with a lot of class and speed when things fall right for him. We run him without the cheekpieces he wore at Ascot. Red Cadeaux looks the one to beat here.

15.35 Newmarket
Three Choirs

I am probably on Richard's third string here, but they have won before. Not that many though, to be honest! I don't know much about the filly in truth but she will know her job. And while she is possibly bred to want more than 6f in time, she is related to juvenile winners. But this is a 20-runner Newmarket maiden with a handful in here who have already shown decent form, so she is obviously up against it first time out. Fleeting Smile will probably take a fair bit of beating.

16.05 Newmarket
Mister Music

I have ridden him a few times, for his maiden win and also when well beaten at Epsom last month. He didn't strike me as a particularly well handicapped horse at Epsom but he clearly likes softer ground than he had there and ran the race of his life when second to me on Fast Or Free in the Britannia next time. He was put up 5lb for that which makes handicaps very difficult, so he takes his chance in a conditions race here against horses stepping back from Group company, among them a horse in Gabrial who was only beaten four lengths in a Group 1 at Ascot. Will find this tough but is improving on the evidence of his Ascot run, has form on the July course, and 1m with cut in the ground is ideal.

16.40 Newmarket
Solemn

Have ridden him once before I think, but he looks a much improved horse these days on the evidence of his six length soft ground win at Sandown and he ran well off this higher mark when third at Salisbury last time. You have to suspect that the handicapper has caught up with him now, but conditions will suit and luck will play a big part here. Being drawn 12 of 20 at least gives me options.
Give everything but up!

William Buick's comments on his rides

11 July
SHANTARAM CAN LIFT THE BAHRAIN TROPHY PROVIDING THE HEAVENS DON’T OPEN
Well, I’m pleased to report that I’m back and firing on all cylinders after three days of sun in the south of France.
It was just the right time for a mini-break when there wasn’t much happening on the home front and now it’s all systems go for the three-day July Meeting.
The first day on Thursday looks good and I’m starting with an interesting and progressive horse with SHANTARAM (1.20) in the Bahrain Trophy.
This is a race I first won in 2008 on Donegal when I was still an apprentice but had lost my claim and it was an important step forward.
I would have ridden the winner last year, Masked Marvel, but I was suspended so I’d like to get it this time and I think it’s possible - providing the course avoids too much rain.
Shantaram is a steadily improving middle-distance performer, the type that the boss, John Gosden, excels with.
He’s gradually getting there and only does what’s required as he showed last time when he put the race to bed in the closing stages at Newmarket on soft ground.
But he’s better on decent going and I hope that’s what we’ll get because this is a sharp upgrade in class.
I’d have a lot of respect for Valiant, who’s almost certainly better than 95, and Rewarded is only 3lb behind my horse on official ratings and should be suited by a significant upping in trip.
But I think this distance of a mile and five will play to my boy’s strengths and I’m hopeful of a very forward showing from a horse that’s still a work in progress.
The Goldsmiths Handicap over ten furlongs is extremely tricky to call but with the bosses team in such good order I have a very live chance in NABUCCO (2.25).
It’s hard to gauge his ability on three runs but his profile is a progressive one as he showed on his third career start – all three being this season – when he beat Guarantee two lengths in a ten-furlong Windsor maiden in the middle of last month.
That one went on to win next time at Newbury so there’s nothing wrong with the form.
Also, my horse handles some give in the ground so there’s no real concern there and, although he handled the turns at Windsor, the July Course should suit him better.
There are plenty I can find as threats in this but I’d be concerned about the Godolphin runner Greek War, the hatrick-seeking Fennell Bay and penalised Stature. But I wouldn’t swop mine.
Marco Botti was come in with a really interesting ride for me in the Prince Of Wales’s Goldsmiths Stakes, JAKKALBERRY (3.00).
This will be the first time I’ve sat on him but I’ve seen plenty of him and I like what I’ve seen which is a strong and consistent middle-distance performer not far short of being top-class.
He was good in Italy but has stepped up in three runs for Marco, two of them in Dubai this winter when he was third in top-class events won by Fox Hunt and Cirrus Des Aigles, beaten just under four lengths both times.
He was coming back from a near three-month break when he flattened out for finish fifth to Sea Moon in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot which leaves him a bit to find on Red Cadeaux.
But I’d be very hopeful that he’d have improved for that run with a nice break in between and while I’m not saying we’ll beat Red Cadeaux, I’m very hopeful of making him fight a lot harder this time.
I’ve been called up by my old boss, Andrew Balding, for LIZZIE TUDOR (3.35) in the six-furlong two-year-old fillies maiden but as I haven’t been to ride out at Kingsclere for a long time now, I’m no wiser about her than you are.
All I can tell you is that I was impressed with Fleeting Smile when she followed me home on Newfangled first time out and you know what she did at Royal Ascot next time.
EASTERN SUN (4.05) did well enough in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and was staying on over seven so the one-mile conditions stakes should suit him.
But he’s the lowest-rated in the field and has 10lb to find on what I see as the likeliest winner, Gabriel. I still think there will be days for my horse, though.
I’ve never ridden BERTOLIVER (4.40) before having got the call up from Stuart Williams in the five-furlong handicap that finishes the card.
He’s dropped back to his last winning mark and, in a very hot race, it’s a question of whether he’ll last home on possibly softer ground than he likes. I honestly don’t know.
