I must say, I am rather suprised that they took so long to cancel the races today. In about Sept/ Oct last year (I cannot remember the exact date) I drove down to Clairwood with 2 horses on a raid. We arrived at 2pm om the Saturday, and it had been raining before that, but it had started to clear up from the moment we arrived. I cannot say that it was particularly wet, and it definitely wasn't cold. At 4pm that same Saturday afternoon, we were informed that racing had been abandoned for the NEXT day! Racing was due off at 12H35 and they had cancelled because the penetrometer was "over 30" and they "expected more rain overnight". We were flabbergasted! Needless to say, there was NO rain whatsoever overnight, or anything the next day. And by 12 noon (when we left to drive back to Joburg), not a drop had fallen for 24 hours, and the sun was coming out. Not a single horse had been galloped on the track, and they did not wait until raceday to reassess the weather or the track conditions. I've never quite worked that one out.
And by 7am today, we still hadnt had conformation of the racing being abandoned. I wish they would stick to one procedure.
