ANC Eastern Cape calls for boycott of SA wines
12 years 6 months ago
Johannesburg - The ANC in the Eastern Cape called for the boycott of South African wines on Tuesday as farmworkers demanded higher wages and better working conditions.
Eastern Cape ANC spokesperson Mlibo Qoboshiyane said people would be supporting workers' exploitation if they continued buying South African-produced wine.
"Next time people binge on wines from the Western Cape, they must know that they support exploitation of black workers," he said.
Farmworkers in the De Doorns area went on strike a week ago in demand of a R150 daily wage and better working conditions.
Qoboshiyane said farmers could afford to pay the workers what they wanted.
"The South African wine industry is making a lot of money locally and internationally; therefore, the wage demands of the workers are realistic and can be met by the employers."
He said Western Cape premier Helen Zille was failing to back the workers because farm owners were financing the Democratic Alliance - the party she leads.
"The people of the Western Cape deserve a better leader than Zille," he said.
Earlier, Zille wrote a letter to President Jacob Zuma, asking him to intervene in the crisis.
De Doorns municipal officials said on Tuesday that violent strike action had resulted in damage estimated at R500 000.
"Property damage has been sustained including the destruction of a packing shed, veld fires, damage to farming crops, burning of tyres in streets and throwing of stones," said municipal spokesperson Anette Radjoo.
On Tuesday, a policeman had to be hospitalised after being hit on the head by a stone thrown by protesters. On Monday, 10 people were arrested for public violence and intimidation.

What a total idiot this Mlibo Qoboshiyane is, making wild statement like this....:

The R150 seems fair- but why when there is anything we don't like as South Africans - we burn and break things(and people too)? Thank the Lord the guys don't punt cause they'd burn down the racetracks if they lost a bet.

Its not the farm workers that are striking but migrant / seasonal workers that are leaderless and lawless .

True. 80% of the 'strikers' were transported from 'squatter' camps. The ANC will do anything to cause chaos in the Western Cape. A few of my friends farms in Ceres & Bonnievale and they have no striking problems whatsoever....I rather won't state on here why not.

The 'farmers' who started this trend using migrant seasonal (Black) workers, were not your traditional Boland farmer, but the foreigners buying farms left right & centre in the Western Cape. My buddy in Bonnievale has a Hollander farming next to him. This oak is loaded, but he's the biggest pr*ick in the area. He uses the migrant "cheap" labourers and guess what.....they are striking. No problems on Riaan's farm

Very few of the so called "hot shots" are not idiots. Agree with Ryperd. I filled up at the Ultra City in Worcester on Tuesday, near the casino, there were three busses with Cosatu supporters getting off. Now this Frans (nogals min van Inter betrekkinge) denying this, my good fark, does he think we are stupid ?
