Put all the IDIOTS that are doing this to our horses and other animals in a room and give me one hour with them. They will not even be recognised by their dentures.

In the Western Cape we have an organisation called The Western Cape Equine Trust that runs a re-homing program mainly for ex race horses, it cares for them, retrains them and then finds them a new home. All future owners are checked out and regular follow ups are done. They do want an up to date veterinary report because it helps them to work out whether the horse requires rest or treatment prior to retraining and ensures that they are helping horses who do have a future and are not seriously damaged. So if you want the best future for your retired or non performing horses you can contact wcetrehoming@gmail.com or call 082 454 5544 to arrange a collection.

Hi gonzo welcome to the forum
Are you a dealer ?
It may seem very rude of me to ask but it's quite strange for a re homing org to advertise for horses
Infact it's extremely hard to re home animals
Cheers

Why are you all suddenly so squeamish?
And why focus on post racing abuse?
This so called 'sport' is riddled with exploitation & abuse from the very start.
1.) Let's start off with mating - hardly a romantic exercise where horse meets mare and they quietly copulate in a grassy paddock. The reality is more akin to rape. To say nothing of mares being put in foal year after year after year.
2.) Now that we have 'early' sales you can bet your bottom dollar that the breeders are busy with the euphemistically named 'help' to ensure the yearlings are 'marketable '. At the yearling sales this week one commentator noted 'how the breeders have learned to 'prepare' the yearlings for an early sale'. Yeah, right. With lucerne no doubt?
3.) And nary a word about the horses that are born with 'faults' or fail to sell. They're all happily trotting around paddocks, aren't they?
4.) It gets even better once they are in training. Approximately 23 hours per day in solitary confinement. More chemical 'help' for those with 'problems' or 'issues' as they are commonly referred to.
5.) As soon as they start racing the beatings start. Industry insiders assure me that this is to 'guide' them. If the modern whips are now so inoffensive why are they needed at all? Apologists are ALWAYS telling me that horses are competitive creatures and want to run.
6.) I remain TOTALLY in favour of humane euthenasia for aged, injured and/or retired horses for whom no homes can be found. For most of them it must be a blessed relief after the miserable lives they are subjected to. The alternatives are even more blood curdling.

I think it's unfair to generalise, you cannot tarnish the whole industry based on some bad apples. You can find horror stories in other equine codes yet racing is always targeted first.

Good day,
Always an interesting topic, and even more so if we get to follow happy stories.
Bob - I would also just like to put to out there that I am in Philippi, and am assisting a Rehoming centre 1 km down the road from the training centre. I assist with the schooling where possible, and Jenny Millington ensures the horses are kept fat and happy.
We rehome them either to existing people we have dealt with in the past, or alternatively homes that we have had approved through our network.
Jenny keeps these horses until they find there compatible home and regular follow ups are done. Jenny is ALWAYS willing to take a horse back if there are any issues.
We have recently helped home horses for Kotzen, Elly, Robinson... And I'd like to out the offer out there of anyone has that special horse looking for that special someone to love them - give me a shout!
