Rhinos in SA

I was absolutely stunned when I heard that 32 Rhinos had already been killed this year to date.
These poachers must get the death penalty. Finish en klaar. FFS.

Make that 39.
There was a massive increase from 2008 to 2012. From 2000 to 2007 there were 120 poachings. In the last 4 years up to 31/12/2012 the stats is frightening
2008 - 83
2009 - 122
2010 - 333
2011 - 448
2012 - 668
In 2011, 26 poachers died in shootouts with anti-poacher units and 2012, 12.
The amount of poachings is increasing rapidly while fewer of these barbarians are being shot ! In 2012 the total amount of arrest's made were 267. 238 were poachers, 11 recievers/couriers, 18 courier/buyers. No exporters have been arrested.
It's very sad to see that there has been 39 poachings in 24 day's in 2013. :X

What makes poaching more senseless is that science has proven rhino horn has no medicinal value
'We need to teach people to stop thinking of rhino horn as a valuable commodity and start focusing on the facts. Rhino horn has no medicinal properties, no curative benefits, and no magical powers.'
The Chinese and Vietnamese is the main users. At the price they have to pay it would seem that only the middle to high class people can afford it........dan is hulle maar 'n stupid flippin klomp.

I agree that just a matter of time before all will be wiped out in SA. What I cannot understand is here in Namibia none were poached this year so far and I think about 2 last year. If you ever visited remote areas like Damaraland and Kaokoland in Western Namibia and even the western part of Etosha pans one will realise that the opportunities for poaching are real. Let's keep fingers crossed that these beautiful animals will survive. Government started a program few years back where rhinos were ressetled on private farms and remains property of gov. In places like Kruger National Park I am sure something sinister is going on where the rhino's are not properly protected.
