JOBURG’S one and only Prawn Festival returns early next month to add a tasty element to leg one of the prestigious SASCOC Triple Crown racing event at Turffontein Racecourse.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the 7500 strong crowd expected to descend on the Johannesburg racecourse for the R1 million Betting World Gauteng Guineas, will again be able to delight in prawns galore.
An estimated 700kg of the popular seafood were consumed on the same day last year.
Phumlelela on-course marketing and sales manager Michael Varney says the prawn fest adds another exciting dimension to the racing spectacle on Saturday 2 March.
“Prawns are synonymous with the South of Joburg and the Portuguese community in general and after the huge success of last year the demand was there to put the festival back in place.
“You won't get prawns anywhere for a better price, there’s something to suit everyone with prices starting at just R45 for a kilogram of Queen prawns.
“The festival element is also important as we have a live band and beer garden with kid’s entertainment, it really is an excellent day out for the whole family!
It’s the best of South African horse racing again this year with five feature races on the card including the R1 million Betting World Gauteng Guineas and the R500,000 Betting World Gauteng Fillies Guineas.
Gates are open from 10am and entry and parking are free.

What percentage of last years crowd were first timers and did they attend another race day afterwards... I'm sure the marketing team have all the stats so it won't be that hard to let us know?

Rather go to Jimmy's and have a good meal.

Prawn festival rhymes to closely to pawn festival...too much like a game of chess, use the pawn.

For the benefit of the prom queens and kings???

Not for me.

WITH more than 700kg of prawns to be consumed, thousands of feet expected through the gates and news of a major new sponsor on board, the Betting World Gauteng Guineas raceday is gearing up to be the biggest and best to date.
Leg one of the SASCOC Triple Crown at Turffontein on Saturday 2 March will provide not only the best of South African horse racing with five feature races on the card, including the R1 million Betting World Gauteng Guineas, but it’s also fast becoming known as Johannesburg’s only Prawn Festival.
Following the success of last year’s festival, where an estimated 7500 punters delighted in 700kg of fresh prawns, Phumelela marketing manager Michael Varney says it was an obvious decision to offer it again on the same say this year.
“Prawns are synonymous with the South of Joburg and the Portuguese community in general and after the huge success of last year the demand was there to put the festival back in place.
“You won't get prawns anywhere for a better price, there’s something to suit everyone with prices starting at just R45 for a kilogram of Queen prawns.”
The SASCOC Triple Crown series has also received a boost in the form of major new racing sponsor Wilgerbosdrift Stud, who have backed the Triple Tiara series in the form of the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, leg one, Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, leg two and Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, leg three.
Phumelela Gaming and Leisure sales executive Clyde Basel says this new alliance is a privilege.
“Wilgerbosdrift have bred multiple graded winners and are having a super season. To have a top Breeder's brand associated with the Triple Tiara series is fantastic for the event. Thanks to stud owner Mary Slack for making this sponsorship possible"
