“I would like to add that on the face of it the bets taken by the Australian punter do not make sense and consequently we have requested Tabcorp to provide with us with an explanation,” he said.
That's ALL the release should have said VEE - We don't need a lesson in the value such a bet created but rather the insane reason behind such a bet of about 330 k Aus Dollars which is no small sum to wager in any country.

Two scenario's, place pools, both 11 runners, neither scenario to yield a dividend of less than R1.00:
Scemario 1
A very open field with prices similar to each other, showing place dividends, before rounding down, of R2.99
With rounding down the take-out increases from 24.5% to 26.8%
Scenario 2
A field with a hot favourite which yields a place dividend, before rounding down, of R1.09
With rounding down the take-out increases from 24.5% to 27.7%
Hope the arithmetic is correct. Spreadsheet attached.
Play around with the "input" boxes by entering arbitrary numbers and results to see different outcomes.

Well put and to the point Mr H
Now if only the responses from the men in charge of racing, could be to the point, in place of the bullshit long winded, responses that they are posting.

Thanks Mac...........interesting that those %'s are enough to make the difference between "value" and "no value"
It is surely clear that serious punters require a fixed price bet(I have never met ,even an owner, who punted his horse(I am not talking about a hopeful R100 each way) on the tote,so how does Saftote get a slice .......a fixed price tote (AKA betting exchange)
