As a close colleague of Vivian, I endorse what you observe. It's not only the R5-million he spent at the party, but over the years he has donated over R30-million to charitable causes which he never publicised. Besides, he is a down-to-earth individual

FYI, I had convinced him about 15 years ago to enter the horseracing industry which he did by purchasing a few horses. Unfortunately, we had a lousy experience with the trainer where one horse died (and we were only told 6 months later), another with hoof infection and went totally lame (sheer neglect), one was banned for being totally intractable (was so much that the filly smashed a goat into that was put in with her to calm her into pulp! Beides, you should have seen the hoof marks on the wall where she kicked wildly! Mark Sham will tell you about her if he recalls), we were charged for training, vet, shoeing, etc whilst the horse was on a spelling farm etc!!!

As a businessman, he promptly cut his losses short. Otherwise, he would probably have been in competition with the Joostes and van Niekerks today!

If there are questions about him, there are a dozen more questions about some of the owners and trainers currently in the industry; let's keep that in perspective also!

He is a shrewd businessman (would have made a great punter/poker player!), who took the opportunities (such as steam-rolling donations and funds for the ANC, being a major unflinching support to Zuma in his difficult times, etc). I haven't heard of him having done anyone in!

There are many others (even within the industry) who took the opportunity and capitalised on it to be where they are today. So, why begrudge the man his billions?


Yes, I did have a personal invite but could not make it because of prior commitments.

Finally, I am not one to exploit my relationship with him for personal gain; we have extreme mutual respect for one another despite my having misgivings about most of the current ANC lot.

I applaud a man who has made his money on the back of hard work as this man apparently has. IMO its still obscene to spend millions on ones own birthday party. Many before him have done it like Branson, Beckham, Philip Green etc. Seems like if you voice your opinion which is not in line with others who agree with this sort of thing then you are a racist.
