In the olden days popes were even more powerful than kings. It was the popes who ratified kings' reigns.......
A pity about some of the rotten apples.

Watched the announcement on BBC ... was impressed by the guy ... and no, I am not RC. Some of the details they gave about his lifestyle were fascinating. Maybe there's hope for the Catholic church yet.
And (sentimental animal lover I am I know) I'm glad he's calling himself a name like Francis.
Though of course it may be Francis Xavier he's thinking of. As a Jesuit I suppose it's bound to be that ... now wouldn't it be revolutionary for a Jesuit to call himself after the leader of the Franciscans? That would be a new thing indeed.

Cardinal Bergoglio became known for personal humility, doctrinal conservatism and a commitment to social justice. [14] A simple lifestyle contributed to his reputation for humility. He lived in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop's residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation [15] and cooked his own meals. [16]
