I have the video of Barties fall in hong kong If you see it you will agree with me that he was done on purpose IMO i dont believe anybody would have been able to live with him as a jockey he was world class and i am not saying this because we grew up together as for the other jocks in the photo they were all great. Bartie was the 1st south african to win the jockeys title in hong kong and it has been held by a south african ever since.

Bartie (and family) done more for South African racing than many of those at the helm today.

Basil took over from Bartie and Doug Whyte took over from Basil and held it ever since

Anton is a great champion BUT bartie/striker/fortune seemed to have that connection with punters. loved by most

with due respect as much as i admire andrew fortune for his trials and tribulations he can never be put up there with the best riders this country has produced ..his very poor feature race record speaks for itself....when you compare his cv to others like roberts marcus khan coetzee whyte leisher marwing strydom delpech its a no contest...he is definitly not up with this top tier

had his life taken a different path early on , for sure he would have been stable jockey to someone longer than a month and then i think he would have won features etc.

He might have been known as a "money" jock early on but his skills in my opinion are on par and greater than those mentioned.

many others fall in his bracket gavin howes and kevin shea are and were outstanding horsemen and could have also gone on to bigger and better things .i forgot to mention jeff lloyd in that top bracket as well
