Just a quick question, where does the bail money go to?
@ Soodum - personally I think that, that procedure in its own right needs to be shot dead...
What was that man doing in his house...
Can you put a board up outside / on your gate and say - trespassers will be shot dead, can you still be held - showing that the character now knows his fate etc... different from Oscars case methinks... and sure Oscar will get off lightly compared to this instance...

It sounds like you were thinking that it is a fee. It is not a fee. After one appears in court, and is convicted and sentenced to jail, the person must serve the sentence and cannot avoid that by paying money. On the other hand, where a person is accused of a crime, but not yet convicted, he can put up money to get temporarily out of jail until the trial. If he shows up, the money is refunded.
The exception is where the prisoner does not post bail but instead pays a bondsman a fee to post the bond. That fee is not refunded. That is the profit for the bondsman who must pay the entire amount if the person does not show.

Really screwed up leaders.....totally fckud up priorities.
An old cliche, "the law is an ass".
Problem in this country is we have ass's, enforcing the law, and making new laws, that cannot be enforced.
No intention to detract from the seriousness of this post, or what, we South Africans face daily, below is something picked up from the Internet, posted by someone else under a joke thread.
The only problem, I see is that in this country, dear George(the character in the story below), would end up been charged with defeating the ends justice.
"George, an elderly man, was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.
George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.
He phoned the police, who asked, "Is someone in your house?" and he said no.
Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available
George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.
"Hello. I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot all the sons of bitches!" Then he hung up.
Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at the George's residence. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.
One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"
George said, "I thought you said there was no one available"

Police followed the correct procedures and this would be the same in most places around the world. Shitty that he gets taken in for what happened but it has to be done, how can we just blindly assume that the home owner's story is legit. The authorities therefore have to follow the letter of the law, let justice take its course. There seems no doubt that there was a break in and that th intruder was seen inside the house, the forensic report should align with the owner's story and that shoul be that. If he is deemed to have acted in self defence whereby he was in 'mortal danger' it should end well. It gets very technical and he basically needs to have a valid reason for firing off a shot. Mass society would deem a break in, robbery and attempted assault as reason enough but the letter of the law may not. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.. keep us posted on further developments.

So what happens if one is, say, an elderly woman? Does one wait till the burglar actually stabs or shoots you, then shoot him? Does one have to wait till he attacks you? I mean, lets face it, if he does get hold of you, you haven't the strength to fight him off, noways. Must you give him any chance to do so?

The article gives the impression that the bullet entered the back (shoulder) of the intruder. Sounds highly suspicious that the bullet 'bounced' off the wall and then returned with enough force to kill when hitting only his shoulder. The intruder probably got weak and died from strangulation if anything. The sniper will get his day in court and if his story is true the forensic evidence will vindicate him. Also suspicious that he claims to have been burgled 15x times yet he still sees fit to leave cash on the table and a gun lying unsecured.

yet the guys at the rugby were given a timeline to hand themselves in...
the guy they beat to death was not tresspassing or anything of the sort...
methinks, if the guy is in his house, he means bad news...
Off topic, how many farm attacks have happened, has the police caught most of the people committing the farm murders???
so the home owner / farm owner has to wait for the intruder to draw a weapon on him, and in that case, it is too late, the home owner gets killed and the intruder wont get caught!!!
What makes the intruders rights more superior than the home owners!!! the intruder should not be there!!! so take him out of there
