On Saturday, 13 July the running of the Gr.1 Mercury Sprint took place at Clairwood Racecourse. Followers of the odds on favourite, What A Winter, were hoping to score maximum points but sadly the son of Western Winter bowed out, finishing third. He scored 10 points and will now be retired to stud. The race was won by the 3 year old daughter of Captain Al, All Is Secret, who paid R18.90 on SAFTote for trainer Vaughan Marshall and second place went to the 5 year old mare, Welwitschia (Oasis Dream). Points scored, 25 and 14 respectively.

The result of the Mercury Sprint has seen last week’s second placed entry FUZZY1 take the lead on 198 points, having scored with Welwitschia. Third placed, Alf 2 jumped from 26th on the log last week, having selected the Mecury Sprint winner. Sir’s Crackers dropped one spot from third to fourth this week.

Other movers into the TOP 10 were Rikesh 5, Rikesh 12 and Sir’s Hotspots who selected All Is Secret. RWD BCL 2 moved up one spot to tenth and punthead3 stayed in seventh place, both scoring with Welwitschia. Last week’s leader, 3A Racing – Harri did not score over the weekend but remains in the top 10.

The two entries that were unsighted in the TOP 50 last week but scored handsomely with All Is Secret and Welwitschia were Kimara C 2 and Sheruya’s Stars. Both have moved into the TOP 10, Kimara C 2 from 87th to second and Sheruya’s Stars from 123rd to tenth, just confirming that there is still plenty to be played for going into Super Saturday on 27 July at Greyville Racecourse, featuring the last bonus race of the competition, the Gold Cup.

The Charity Turf Challenge competition was concluded on “Super Saturday” at Greyville Racecourse, featuring the final bonus race of the competition theGr.1 Gold Cup and supporting feature races the Gr.1 Champions Cup, Gr.2 Gold Bracelet, Listed Darley Arabian and Listed Umgeni Handicap. With a total of 126 points on offer for the above features, it was a grandstand finish to the 2013 competition!


In the Gr.1 Gold Cup, Seal and Blake were the two notable disappointments for a few of the frontrunners in the competition and Jeppe’s Reef (Jallad) scored the maximum points, 25 points for first place plus an added 5 points (30 points) for paying over R15 on SAFTote (R30.80). There were a number of entries that were hoping to move up the leader board with Run For It, Whiteline Fever, Jet Explorer and Espumanti in the Gr.1 Champions Cup however it was Jackson (Dynasty) that bounced back to his best scoring 20 points. In the Gr.2 Gold Bracelet all of Thunder Dance, Happy Archer and Jet Belle failed to score and it was Razzle Dazzle Rose (Jet Master) who capitalised scoring 14 points. Sirshan Reddy aka “Sir’s Crackers” is this year’s Charity Turf Challenge Champion!



Going into the final day of the competition, “Sir's Crackers” was on 194 points, 4 points behind the leader “FUZZY 1” and was hoping for a rough result in the Gr.1 Gold Cup to stake a claim on the R100 000 first prize as his entry had no Gold Cup horse.



On paper, his entry looked weak as he also had no horse represented in the Gr.2 Gold Bracelet and relied solely on Jackson to score for him in the Gr.1 Champions Cup. It was the perfect result for him in the Gold Cup and with Jackson winning the Champions Cup, he took the lead and only Thunder Dance stood in his way of winning the competition. On 192 points was Rikesh 5 (12th) and Bloodshot 2 (13th) was on 191 points, both these entries had a realistic chance of finishing first and second respectively if Thunder Dance won the Gold Bracelet but it was not to be and “Sir’s Crackers” was crowned CHAMPION of the 2013 Champions Season Charity Turf Challenge sponsored by Gold Circle, CONGRATULATIONS to Sirshan Reddy and the TOP 10 finishers!
