Justin Snaith runs the rangy Jet Master filly Jet Supreme in the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 at Greyville on Saturday and she has surprised him since arriving in Durban.
“I didn’t think when I brought her to Durban that she would be running in a Grade 1, but she’s improved here in similar style to Jet Explorer.”
She began her KZN campaign with a facile 3,25 length win in the Grade 3 Umzimkhulu Stakes over 1400m at Scottsville and then stayed on for third in the Grade 2 KRA Fillies Guineas at Greyville.
One of the keys to her turnaround is that she has settled better in her races here than she did in Cape Town and Snaith gives Sean Cormack a lot of the credit for this.
“He settles a lot of horses,” he said.
Snaith has no doubts she will see out the trip.
“She is out of a Zabeel mare. She will have no problem.”
He concluded, “She is doing very well, but it will be a hell of a race. It will sort out the form lines between, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.”
Jet Supreme has recently been clipped to make her feel more comfortable in the Durban weather, which can be hot and humid.

Jeff Freedman runs the Mogok gelding Wild One in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville on Saturday and is quietly confident.
Wild One is an ever improving sort who came from a long way back to finish a 1,75 length third in the SA Derby last time out.
Freedman said, “He’s doing good. He is drawn wide but will come into draw 14 if the reserve runners come out. Any bad draw is a big worry, but Bernard Fayd’Herbe is not bad at overcoming draws. Good horses can win from any draw. He’s matured since he’s come back from Johannesburg. He came from a long way off them in the Derby, so gave too much start. With a better draw it would have been a different result.”
Freedman reckoned Wild One had the necessary turn of foot that is a vital asset at the tight Greyville circuit.
He wasn’t wearing blinkers three runs ago over 1600m at Greyville when wandering around for much of the straight before finally getting going and beating the useful Lehaaf in a Novice Plate.
However, the blinkers clearly helped him in his two Johannesburg starts and if he was unlucky in the Derby, he was even more unlucky in the Derby Trial over 2000m when caught in a pocket for a long time in the straight before being extracted and finishing a 0,5 length second to the subsequent Derby winner Wylie Hall, despite giving the latter 1,5kg.
Freedman was happy with a gallop Wild One had at Greyville last week on Monday.
“He ran right through to the line,” he said.
He concluded, “I know mine has no stamina doubts and the question is whether Capetown Noir and Vercingetorix stay. “
