R1 is something of a nightmare. All the main contenders (according to the market) are coming off rests and none of them have particularly great form. de Kock often has them ready after a rest but Global Power finished 0.2l behind Impeccable on his 3rd start. Impeccable is closely matched with Magic Of Rome, who seems to struggle to stay 1200 and is hoping to come out the maidens at the 50th attempt, finished 0.75l behind Torero Dancer in the race won by Barbel Run (1160). Manzai in his 3rd run finished only 0.5l ahead of T Dancer. Club Flag finished over 10l behind B Run on his 2nd start. I could go on and on. For me, at the prices, I'll chance Strong Blaze who runs from the 1 box on the inside track and winners have come from his races in KZN. And in case the outside runs better, I will do an idiot with Marsden Jack. Last three were over further and not disgraced given a couple of poor draws/lameness. On his second run, and the last time he ran over the distance he finished about 2.5l ahead of both Magic of Rome and Last Battle (who has beaten a number of these including MOR and Impeccable). Given that MJ was reported as not striding out that day then fair to say he would most likely have beaten those two by further and with the other form mentioned, on the very bare facts, it would seem there is a little potential for MJ and at 33/1 compared to some of the other prices available, he's worth a small idiot imo, though of course the draw may scupper his chances.
