When I was 16 I had many things I wanted to "become" - These kids are too young to decide what they really want to do and more often than not it is the families that see "racing millions" and put pressure on the kids to ride - increase the age of entry to 21 so you can limit weight issues and they can get a proper education that will widen their horizons . It will also cut huge costs because you don't need a "school" and those that are there will want to be there because it's what they want not what Uncle Jack the punter wants!!

mr h with respect this is no a clever post. of course the kid must go to school when he is a young age. this is when he learn the most. to start a young man at 21 to start learn mean he is 25/26 before he qualify? plenty do this succesful before why change? in life their is allways those who take chances and allways those who waste.

Really well many Jocks are already starting to make other plans before they are thirty because they are not cut out to be Jockeys - Take a look at the year end photos and have a look where the jocks are now? Show me one woman Jockey still riding in SA? I don't think it is clever to set someone up for failure - being a jockey is not like being a plumber - your body mass is so important and if by 25 you already have weight issues then you are in hell - Many many people only start earning real money when they are 25-26 - how long does it take to do an LLB or to become a doctor or to become a trainer?

also surely without time spent on general education the time spent in the academy could be shortened

go to any university and see how many people start with one degree and change or fail be fore they finish. go look how many apprentice start a trade and how many finish. why you have these thought that 100% must be succesful by academy? is no possible my friend. your thoughts are good but they are no practical. life is this way. the cream is come to the top the rest well they need to find alternate career. this happen in all walks of life

flash you make valid points but my problem is that many appys only go to the academy because of money - just read their previews and you will see " I had never sat on a horse before" "I knew nothing about horses but my Grandfather was a big punter and took me along" etc - I
