On tonight's Winning Ways, The Good humourously called Tom O'C the only "Irish-Dutchman" :). At that Irish Ale House pub is a memorial dedicated to those Irish who defected from the British to join the Boers in one of the Boer Wars. The pub flies both the Tri-colour and the Vierkleur whoah. I can't read Irish nor Afrikaans but would appreciate if someone can translate the Afrikaans. Hope its legible.

Mac, a bit of photoshopping ... Here's the original minus one word I really couldn't make out:

Opgereg ter nagedagtenis van die Iere wat vir die boerenasie geveg het in sy tyd van nood [.....?}. Mag hulle offers vir vreiheid en reg 'n ewige band smee tussen die Ierse volk en die Boerenasie en mag hierdie monument 'n simbool daarvan wees.

Thanks Mavs :)

Translated from Google:

To commemorate the Irish who fought for the Boers in their time of need. Power they offered for vreiheid? (and right?) to form an everlasting bond between the Irish people and the Boer Nation and this monument is a symbol of it.

For The Good and Tom O'C - the only "Irish-Dutchman" ...:)

Actually I'm another ... carry an SA and an Irish passport, one from my father and one from my mother.

Translation: Erected as a commemoration of the Irish who fought for the Boer nation in their time of need [...?]. May their sacrifice for freedom and justice form an eternal bond between the Irish people and the Boer nation, and may this monument be a symbol thereof.

See, I know Afrikaans and English, LOL!

Happy braaiing {glum face} ... I will also be blerrie braaiing but not by choice. Woke up to a merry powercut ... Merry as in a Giles cartoon if any of you know Giles' immortal cartoons. It's the third this week. In Pretoria aka Tshwane three powercuts in one week would be headlines, but in the Transkei no-one even mentions the fact. Don't worry guys, it's coming your way too one day, snarl ...

Had to haul out the camping equipment just to get a morning cup of tea. No TV, and soon no computer either {moan, moan, self-pity}.
