I am told that there will be something held for Bertie at the Saddlers Arms venue at Greyville at 13:00 on Thursday. Ashes are being spread at Greyville and a few drinks etc.

RIP Bertie who always used to say "Go for your badge.."..when I was in Varsity I used to run for a bookie on course and then as a clerk for him off course and I used to run bets for a couple of Berties close mates...they cleaned up one year on Beau Art and a horse called Mellisa I think enough to purchase an entire block of apartments and he gave me a fat tip..what a great man

RETURN OF BERTIE HAYDEN................................article from September 1988 by RECONDITE.
QUOTE
The return of Bertie Hayden has added to the riding interest of the season. He made his comeback at Milnerton July Day, the day that marked his Rothmans July triumphs of the past. The choice proved auspicious. He was placed on his first mount and won on his second, holding off a strong challenge by a head, and his showings since then have left no doubt that in spite of the passing years he has lost none of his wilyness.
This was shown at Milnerton when, turning into the straight, he sent his mount across the track to the outside rail, something that had not been attempted for more than a decade. The ploy was successful, his mount making up the ground given away and hanging on to win by half a length on the firmer going.
END.
R.I.P. Bertie, you are a legend and will always remain my hero amongst jockeys of all times.
