The Doug Campbell-trained Kingston Boy will love the 1200m course and distance of Friday night’s Gr 2 Post Merchant at Greyville and so should the Mike Bass-trained Tevez.
Another horse that will be suited to the trip, the Frank Robinson-trained Eddie Sweat, impressed jockey Anthony Delpech in a workout on Tuesday morning.
Geoff Woodruff had his doubts about his speedy filly Miss October seeing out the trip, while Mark Dixon lamented the draw for his contestant Showmetheway.
The Post Merchants is characterised by horses that can turn it on from off the pace and there could hardly be a better candidate to fulfil that credential than Kingston Boy, who has an electric turn of foot.
Campbell said that the four-year-old Mogok gelding would be at his peak, before adding, “He is very well and I was bit disappointed with his third place last time at Scottsville when he came too wide and too late. Kevin (Shea) knows him well and he loves this course.”
Kingston Boy is drawn in pole position, so should have plenty in reserve before straightening, although he is officially 3,5kg under sufferance with the best in at the weights, All Is Secret.
Bass was successful in the Tibouchina Stakes last Saturday at Clairwood with Hammie’s Hooker and will attempt to add another Gr 2 to his Champions Season shopping cart with Tevez.
His assistant at his Clairwood Champions Season base, Robert Fayd’Herbe, said, “Tevez didn’t really enjoy Scottsville. You have to have a tough horse to run there and he is a bit of a softy. He can turn it on but is drawn a bit wide so will have to come from off the pace and it’s going to be hard.”
The four-year-old Caesour gelding was raised to a 105 merit rating after his fast finishing third in the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m at Kenilworth in January and in his Champions Season pipe opener he finished a decent 2,5 length third to Normanz from an unfavourable draw over 1100m at Clairwood.
He gave 7kg to Normanz that day and the latter won the Gr 1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint next time out, where Tevez had another unfavourable draw and didn’t enjoy it.
Sean Cormack rides Tevez for the first time on Friday night. He has a tough draw of nine to overcome and he is also 3,5kg under sufferance with All Is Secret.
Delpech gave glowing feedback to Robinson about Eddie Sweat after his workout on Tuesday. The Summerveld trainer said that Delpech had said he would be a “big runner.” Eddie Sweat is drawn well in three, but is 5,5kg.
Woodruff said that the speedy Var mare Miss October had been doing well. All five of her wins have been over 1000m and he confirmed that he was “not sure” she stayed the trip. However, she is the second best in at the weights, being only 0,5kg under sufferance. She is draw wide in eleven and MJ Byleveld rides.
Dixon said that he felt Showmetheway would stay the 1200m trip and added that he would have been confident if it had not been for the draw. The five-year-old Muhtafal gelding is drawn widest of all in the thirteen horse field and is 4kg under sufferance. He will be ridden by his regular jockey Keagan de Melo.

I am a little intruiged that Divine Jet ran a 1450m race last time.......perhaps a pipe opener to blow this field away? The more i look the more confusing. DJ has cost me PLENTY before.
The 3 i like are Kingston (loves course), DJ (because of that previous run) and Varikate (ran to the champ in G1 last time)

She did run well last time. She might be treading water when Kingston Boy blows past her.
