i think a trainers lot is no different to that of the jockeys.

the top 20 in S.A. probably make a dam good living.......... the next 60 probably O.K. the bottom 40 jocks.......... more than likely BATTLING BIG TIME.

I know some small trainers and they really battle especially when owners don't pay

The feed is costly and some trainers buy weekly due to cash flow

Really tough is the stable doesn't have good horses earning stake cheques

Yes there is a lot of jocks that battle but they do not battle as much as some trainers .the trainers have to feed the horses in hes yard even if the owner does not pay

trainers make most money...they lump you with hefy vet bills...to pay 8k plus for an average horse is certainly not worth being an owner...
currently have shares and soon get out because the beneficiary is the trainer and jockey not the owner...

I don't charge anywhere near R8000 and I certainly do not make more money than any of my owners do in their business every month. I don't think that some realise the cost of say horse food. A bale of Lucerne in Dbn, R120+, teff R60+ just ordinary straw bedding R38 and a sack(epol bags size) of shavings R20! A bag of Epol Gold cup cubes is R179+ vat.

I dont believe you had to buy into ownership in order to find that out. Owning horses is a hobby not an investment, no matter how loud some breeders may want you to believe that it is a sound investment. I had an wonderful time when I owned and racing was much exciting. It is like watching your son playing soccer for the school team. Will do it again!

I don't think ANY trainer in SA should be charging less than R7k a month BASIC

100% - The only reason I won't do it again is that I hated losing a horse to laminitis as the poor boy suffered a great deal in his last days -

if i look at the logs.
25 trainers do really well(assuming they don't punt away the profits.
45 trainers make an OK living. if they have a good business discipline.

the rest probably make ends meet month to month and enjoy doing what they love.

top 15 jocks do really really well
next 25 jocks do well
next 25 do oK
The others probably struggle

Mr H we had to put down Falko a few months ago after he got laminitis after a rig op. Tried everything. we basically had 3hrs sleep a night for a week with icing him etc. Eventually on the Vets advice we took that terrible decision. He was a lovely kind horse. It was like losing a kid.:(
