Frodo, even if the tote ends up paying more I would rather know what I am getting before the race than play the tote payout lottery.

Shrek, I have found that in some cases, the tote does offer (significant) better odds (especially places) on some of my fancies - but one has to be able to monitor and place your bet at the last moment - in general though, I agree a fixed price bet is normally the way to go (tu)
