Power Failure in Centurion Gauteng July 2014

Centurion residents are without power since Sunday morning due to vandalism and cable theft at Brakfontein substation.

Centurion residents might still be without power until midnight tonight.

Councillor Ina Strijdom said the Tshwane metro has been working throughout the night to restore power in affected areas such as Brakfontein, Rooihuiskraal, Amberfield, The Reeds, Noordwes, Thatchfield and Wierdapark.

“The metro is still working on the problem and they hope the power will be restored by midnight tonight. If not then, hopefully by Tuesday morning,” she said.

Centurion residents were without power since Sunday morning due to cable theft and vandalism at the Brakfontein substation recently. The metro is currently assessing the full extent of the theft and vandalism.

Strijdom urged residents to switch off all non-essential appliances starting with the geyser.

Selby Bokaba, spokesperson for the metro, said residents are urged to report power failures. SMS the word POWER followed by your account number to 082-612-0333. Or report a power failure to 012-35- 9999, choosing the electricity option or 080-111-556.

I work with 9 shops in this area primarily at the New FOREST HILL Shopping centre and around the Centurion CBD. I cant begin to explain the losses over Month end.

with Tears in my eyes,. Generators don't help because no one and nothing else has lights. so no feet in the centres.

We (Ballito) didn't have any electricity from Friday 21h30 to Saturday 16h30...also heard that the outage extended to Westbrook on coast and Sandfields inland...so roughly an area 10/12 kms by 15kms...no reasons given...:S...part of the area is in KwaDukuza Municipality and part in Ethekwini Municipality...

Methinks the problem originated in 2008 when council used budgeted increase in rates revenue (derived from plan submissions) to bring salaries in line with bigger municipalities rather than buy more electricity from Eskom for development to happen...yes, development didn't happen immediately due to 2008 > recession but has taken place in last 2-3 years but no electricity...can take 9 months to get a new electricity connection in KwaDukuza...:(

Just read that there are actually two sub-stations damaged at the moment; the Brakfontein one was damaged / vandalized by cable thieves on Sunday - will only be operational by Thursday apparently, the areas affected seem to be to the west of the Old JHB rd. Then there was also a fire in the Kentron sub-station yesterday afternoon , they hope to have this one restored to full power by midnight tonight - areas to the east of the Old JHB rd (including the Centurion Mall shopping center) are affected.

what about the poor people of Lenasia and Soweto where it seems power is off more than on - Eskom management really have a great deal to answer for - Amazingly there were very few power problems leading up to the elections now it seems like everyday another area is plunged into darkness for days

My understanding is that all work has stopped the two new coal Power stations due to major strike actions.

so further delays and costs to the country.

Why don't they guard these stations?? How can they have cable theft still in this day and age?

Guards don't help, they are easily bought/intimidated.

In Mthatha where I live we often had two powercuts per week, some lasting 24 hours or longer. The problem for households was the freezer compartment of the fridge would defrost in that time ... once I had to throw out hundreds of rands of meat and chicken. The problem for businesses was huge of course.

But those days the big city areas didn't suffer much. I always wondered what would happen once they did, because for sure they will. We are walking rapidly backwards in many respects. Staff don't know what to do to get ahead of problems, they just act reactively. They will maybe hire guards and then have another level of problems to deal with when these desert or get shot.

BEE has had unforeseen effects already and will have more.
