Just saw the award winners and noticed that Louis the King didn't win anything (nominated in 3 categories)...a Triple Crown winner, only the second ever in SA and no recognition given...if not good enough to win two of the category awards due to Legislate, then maybe a Special Achievement award due to the rarity of the feat...

What an absolute disgrace, we now have a Grade 2 winning champion 2yr old filly on the strength that she was unbeaten after 3 starts.....

Just when one thinks that things cannot get any worse we go from the sublime to the ridiculous.

I am not even going to get into the other awards that i think are dubious like Stayer/Miler....

I had no idea that you could win Champion without even contesting a Grade 1 race, great article in the Sporting Post regarding this.

T, I have said for years a points system needs to be implimented, where certain races are given a rating. Taking into account fillies (3 year old) in open company, likewise the colts and accordingly adjusted for the time of the year the race takes place. Grade one winning must be a minimum requirement for a nomination. Awards are based on passed achievements not on possible future results.
I am thankful they got it right this year !

For me, I cant see it more simple for the winner of the category should have the most number of grade one wins. Failing that, or a tie, the most number of grade 2 wins. Failing that, ......... the most number of grade 3 wins. Etc, etc.

That sounds easy Mac
I understand that the panel submitted individually to the auditors there was no panel discussion.
I would have thought that Robyn and the triple crown winner would have received an award, however not sure if an article was submitted?
I would have also given Variety Club the award on his own.

Points system eradicates human bias - Why on earth do we have a Merit Rating system for races but when it comes to awards that effect the paddock we decide to let a group of people decide which horse should get the Blue Riband? We have an established Graded race program and that should be used as the benchmark. If a trainer chooses not to contest certain events through tactics or because of readiness then that's too bad. We would eliminate much controversy for Awards and entrance into races like the July and Met if we gave sole consideration to performance(down to the top ten finishers) in Graded races. Supposed manipulation would be eliminated and trainers and owners will have no reason to cry as the ball will be their court t5o gain entry to the top races and awards.
