Clyde's commentary is clear and uncluttered through the race, but when it comes to the finish, especially in feature races, he is too much of a screamer/screecher at high pitch for my ears liking.

In bread and butter races on the other hand, while not been as ear-piercing in the finish, he would quite often not call 4th and sometimes not even 3rd, so you'd have to wait for result to be posted before you could know whether you had the quartet or not, which used to give me the screaming chits.

Cohen much better by far on these two issues, imo.

On the other hand, Clyde had a decent eye for what's looking good cantering down, and besides obviously also knew plenty of the day's graft.

Sometimes (especially when working with Molly) he would give confidence about a runner at a decent price which you sensed he knew something about, just to throw the punter a bone often towards the end of the meeting. I recall a memorable 40/1 or 50/1 last race double that helped me get out of jail once, but not long after that, Clyde stopped letting the odd cat out the bag, and would In fact not even offer comment on what looked good in the canter past as he used to before.

I thought there might have been some inner-circle complaints made privately to him which brought this to such an abrupt end (owners/trainers or maybe even a bruised bookie or two who had to foot the bill for these generous hand- outs).

Not sure if anyone else ever noticed this, it was a good few years ago, but to me it was painfully obvious that the generous gifts of before had been replaced by a conscious restraint on Clyde's part to making no serious comment whatsoever on a horse's chances in his banter with on-course presenters, except for some little waffle. Pity.

Agree that he is very good...sticks to the race as it unfolds rather than who / where the money is on...:)

Note to Alistair Cohen.

Please note that in a 6/7 horse field on Saftote rules, the first two past the post qualifies for a place and has such in Mauritius Race 3 and not what you mentioned after the race, that there are no place dividend. Racing is a tough game...

5.2 - PLACE POOL
5.2.1. PURPOSE: The purpose is to select a horse placed first, second, third or fourth in a
specified race, subject to the provisions of rules 5.2.3.3.
5.2.2. UNIT OF BETTING AND MINIMUM BET: Refer to Chapter 4.
5.2.3. PLACE BETTING: Whenever there are -
5.2.3.1. Eight to fifteen runners, dividends shall be paid in respect of the horses
placed first, second and third.
5.2.3.2. Sixteen or more runners, dividends shall be paid in respect of the horses
placed first, second, third and fourth.
5.2.3.3. The Operators may offer place pools in races with less or more runners
than specified in 5.2.3.1 and 5.2.3.2 above. For instance, a place pool may be
offered on races with six or seven runners, where dividends will be paid in respect of
the horses placed first and second or offer dividends for more than four places in
selected races or events.

The Tabgold site shows the pool was R2944. I see Vardashian was scratched after the running the race therefore no dividend.
