I agree with most of what Mark said but what I do disagree with is that he said you need a "great horse" and "a great trainer" to win this race. There has been many cases in the recent past where big dogs have won this race who haven't won a race since then........I'm not naming names.
Still, In my opinion the race to take some collateral form from is the Daily News in Dbn. There is a slew of horses here who ran in that race and the two who come out by far the best at the weights are Rake's Chestnut and Everest. Since I'm no Rake's fan and he is about as consistent as my sex life, I simply cannot pick him.
Everest is an interesting runner. Doyle made far too much use of him in the conditions last time and i think Gray still just used that as an exercise gallop for Everest. I think he will be fit, Muzi can get handy from that draw and he will keep galloping. For me this race is won a lot of times by a well handicapped horse or a horse that shakes loose on the front end.......
I find this Summer Cup very difficult to assess. Here is my top 4 in no particular order.
Everest
Bouclette Top
Louis the King
As you Like
Happy punting!

Yes. But read Craig Eudey's Post. Include Fly First Class.
I am going for Snowdon.

Arrived safely (in Johannesburg), really looking forward to tomorrow's meeting, but how's this for an absolutely stab in the dark on the first leg regards the price and what it is currently trading at. I'm almost certain the second leg will go close to winning, see that has shortened into favourite :-

Some early thoughts:
Race 3:If Rainy Day regains her best form she is very well in here. Laser Star looks very promising. African Dream, For the Lads, Goldie Coast, Shepard One and Winter Star all competitive. Selection:16/11/13/2
Race 4: Very open, but One Mans Dream keeps improving and could be value.
Race 5: Some smart fillies line up here. Smart Call has bumped top opposition her last two, and is a narrow first choice. Zrinski could be anything. Banbury needed her last run and should improve from that. Tamale, Bilateral and Ataab all have chances.
Selection:3/14/4/2
Race 6: Harry's Son ran a cracker last time, although Jayyed was a bit disappointing. Sirens Call will appreciate the extra 200m, and should show further improvement on a very smart performance last time. While these are the obvious three, others could improve.
Selection: 16/1/2/8

Race 7: This race is much more open than the betting suggests. I like Bouclette Top and As you Like at the weights. They are both well in on their best 3yo form. Go wide in the exotics.
Race 8:Carry on Alice and Pine Princess look the right two, although Arcetri Pink has good form. Mohave Princess and Erin also in with a shout. This race should answer a few questions about the relative strength of the 3yo vs older fillies.
Selection: 8/9/3/4
Race 10: Bravo Mayo showed dramatic improvement last time. If repeating that effort will be hard to beat. Gitiano is the main danger.
Selection 10/8/1/3

Having a crack at henry higgins @12/1 e/w weighted to place. 8 out of 9 placings on this course and in good form, should go close again.

Phew some big prices today - opportunities for dutching.
Race 3, Magnolia Handicap: Dutch #11 LAZER STAR and #13 FOR THE LADS; for the dutch you get: both were easy and impressive in their last wins; on a hattrick; trainer Tarry is in form; runs fresh; I think the dutch is worth 5/2, 28/10 is available.
Race 4, Joburg Merchants: Dutch #2 NORMANZ and #10 ONE MAN'S DREAM; for the dutch you get: very classy; last win was easy and impressive; on a hattrick; jockeys Cormack and Striker are hot and so too are the respective trainers Charlie Laird and Goosen; I think the dutch is worth 3/1, 4's are available.
Race 5, Fillies Mile: #2 BANBURY; on MR's she has a very good weight advantage; a beaten favourite last start; will get a better ride this time from Striker; I think worth 9/2, 10's are available.
Race 6, the Dingaans: #1 HARRY's SON; on MR's the most favourable weight advantage; very very classy; easy and impressive last start; on a hattrick; Striker rides and hot Laff trains; nap him.
Race 7, the Summer Cup: #13 BOLD INSPIRATION; going for 5-in-a-row; a touch of class; oh so easy and impressive in his last start; hot Cormack rides and hot Charlie trains; I think worth 7's, 13's are available.
Race 8, Ipi Tombe Challenge: #9 PINE PRINCESS; classy; her wins were easier than looked; on MR's has a good weight advantage; hot Delpech rides, hot de Kock trains; I think worth 28/10, 5's are available.
Race 9, the RA 3200: dutch #9 SHIMMERING GEM and #12 KINGSTON MINES; for the dutch you get; Shimmering Gem won a good race from the front and could be a little classy over ground; Kingston Mines was oh so easy and impressive in his last start; hot de Kock trains; I think the dutch is worth 26/10, 4's is available.
Prosperous punting

I agree with you on the Gitiano, Peter.. Really like the e/w on this one. Slowly down the weights and on earlier form be right there. Has the class for this.

The most stunning morning I live 10 km from track no sign of rain just spoke to a trainer at Turffontein says all clear there.
