Hours

You would usually work 40 hours a week, including early mornings, late nights and weekends. Overtime is often available, and you may be able to do part-time work, casual work or work on a freelance basis.

You would need to be prepared to work in cold, wet and muddy conditions, and you would wear protective clothing and footwear.

Income

Starting salaries for unqualified grooms can be around £10,000 a year.

Qualified grooms can start at around £12,000 a year.

Experienced grooms can earn £16,000.

Some employers may provide you with accommodation and food. Some may also offer free stabling for your own horse along with riding lessons

£200 a week in newmarket would pay for a room the size of a prison cell and a night out with a kebab thrown in

Average wage in the part of the world 3 or 4 times what the grooms get paid

The £16k would be decent enough up in scotland or the north of england

The thing i hate the most is seeing the elated grooms doing the winner walk in at a track for some fat trainer or an owner to grab the reigns from their hands

Bob what would you want the owner to do, step back after paying for the show on his pat often for years before his donkey arrives? Give me a fking break dude, lets get real here.

When I'm on course at Kenilworth i find it amusing watching them Run back and forth from the tote to the stable after each race. But its a nice gesture giving the Groom a prize on a BIG Race day if the horse he looks after wins.. but then again thats all it really is a nice gesture.. they should give the oke something better than a beer mug as Sylvester mentioned.

Why is it ridiculous for a groom to be happy?
For fucks sake he spends more time than anyone else with the horse
I am not an owner but I certainly would be happy to see a groom with passion for my horse
