I love prawns?

They either run out or you have to stand in a queue for at least 2 hours while people buy in bulk for the next year while they let all their friends push in front of you. While they are eating their 5kgs of prawns they pushed in to get, they'll have stolen 100 entry forms for the lucky draw and be filling those in. Last year by the sixth race the poor guy had to draw 10 names out before he got a new name, was very embarrassing. This isn't an event for a racecourse in my opinion and detracts from the racing rather than promotes it. I don't usually knock a race day but this was the worst one I have ever attended.

lol....................No doubt every man and his dog will be on course for the feast of prawns at giveway prices. Aside from the side dish, will there be much interest in the main course?

I believe one and a half tons have been ordered for Cape Town and JHB should be a feast especially at those prices.

The Cape Town Prawn Festival at Kenilworth Racecourse today brought down the curtain on another memorable Cape Summer Of Champions Season and the massive crowd who thoroughly enjoyed themselves is proof of how popular this event has become.

The initiative behind the family oriented Cape Town Prawn Festival is aimed at giving back to the community as over a ton of prawns are sold at cost price and over R70 000 in prizes are given away to race goers.

Jenna Adams, Marketing Manager for Kenilworth Racing said, “Whilst the organizers prepared to cater for more than double the number of people than last year it was overwhelming to find out the event in fact trebled. Therefore it is safe to say that the Cape Town Prawn Festival is becoming one of the largest events held at Kenilworth. We are very excited to prepare for even further growth next year and another initiative will be to engage with government to assist with infrastructure and inventory.”

The racing was also a big attraction and many-times Cape Champion trainer Mike Bass and top jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe both scored notable feature race doubles on the day.

Bass’s top class mare Hammie’s Hooker gave her sire Trippi yet another Cape Summer Graded race success when easily winning the Grade 3 Breco Seafoods Prix Du Cap under her regular pilot Fayd’Herbe and that was after Bass’s grey Silvano gelding Ze Kaiser had won the Non-Black Type Cape Mile under stable jockey Grant van Niekerk. Hammie’s Hooker put the bad luck of her season to date behind her and proved that 1400m is her optimum trip. Bass’s farriers deserve much credit for helping Ze Kaiser, who has had feet problems, to realise his potential.

Later the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup sponsored by Cape Thoroughbred Sales over 3200m was won in courageous style by the top weight, the Joey Ramsden-trained Argentinian-bred gelding Coltrane, under Fayd’Herbe

The Q's did get longer throughout the afternoon.More than double sold compare to last year and no one could have forecast the turnout of people coming to the course.....all bodes well for next year with 2 cooking areas planned and hopefully 8 serving stations per area.
Lots of positives on the day overshadowed the few negatives....
