Able Friend is settling in to his new environment at trainer Michael Bell’s Fitzroy House Stables in Newmarket where he will prepare for the G1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Ascot next Tuesday (16 June).
Trainer John Moore, who will join his stable star on Friday, 12 June, is pleased with the reports he is receiving from his team on the ground in England, which includes his son, George Moore, Jockey Club vet Paul Robinson and work rider Thomas Yeung.
“Able Friend travelled unbelievably well; he ate and drank the whole way on the plane,” said Moore. “We weighed him and he only lost 10lb, so for a horse that is 1280lb, that’s nothing.
“When he got to England, Rossdales’ vet, Mike Shepherd, and our vet, Paul Robinson, were very happy with what they were seeing. The minute they put him into his stall he just went and drank a lot of water.”
Moore intends to work Able Friend on Polytrack in the build-up to the mile showpiece next week.
“He’ll be out on the Polytrack close to Michael’s yard,” he said. “It’s a flat gallop and that’s what we want. We’ll keep it as flat as we can. He’ll be out this morning on that Polytrack for a trot and we’ll get a chiropractor in to just go over him because he’s a monster of a horse.”
Able Friend took in the wide open spaces of Newmarket Heath as, appearing fresh and well, he headed out across the Hamilton Road to exercise close to the Rowley Mile racecourse this morning (Monday 8 June). The big chestnut completed four laps of the trotting ring under Yeung and then proceeded to complete two laps of the round gallop, once clockwise and once counter clockwise. The Shamardal five-year-old, who was led in his work by the Bell-trained My Strategy under Lewis Steward, then returned to the stables for a pick of grass.
Meanwhile, Moore also revealed that Able Friend, although taking the two-flight 20-plus hour journey in his stride, was not too enamoured with what he saw during a brief stop-over in Dubai.
“When he was in Dubai he took one look outside the pallet - where the cargo plane was he could see the desert - and the vet, Paul Robinson, said he took one look outside, saw the sand, must have thought to himself there’s no grass there, and put his head straight back in again!” said the handler.

He has been amazing in Hong Kong. Really hope he carries that into Ascot. Would be nice to have Variety Clubs feat in Hong Kong be looked at in a even better light , but Able Friend is a super horse and deserves the kind of recognition that would come from a win here.

WORLD domination is a bold ambition, but there is little point in travelling from Hong Kong to Royal Ascot without trying to make a mark and the team behind Able Friend are hopeful that in Tuesday's Queen Anne their horse will prove himself to be the best in the world.
On Racing Post Ratings the John Moore-trained five-year-old is the joint-third highest rated turf performer this year, along with Solow, who heads the betting for the royal meeting's curtain-raiser, and sprinter Brazen Beau.
But the Able Friend camp are aiming for top spot and George Moore, assistant trainer to his father John, said: "The horse has proven himself the best miler in Hong Kong and with our season closing in July, Royal Ascot comes at the perfect time to prove himself the best horse in the world ratings-wise."
Speaking at Royal Ascot's media day, Moore added: "Able Friend is one of the best horses we have ever trained in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Able Friend has such a big following that he is really 'Hong Kong's Horse'. I hope he can do everyone proud.
"When you take him out on the track in the mornings he looks around and takes everything in. He has pretty much the perfect mentality for a racehorse. I don't think going over the straight mile at Ascot will be an issue as he has a very big stride on him. Good to firm ground will suit."
The chances of the ground being good to firm for the first race of the five-day royal meeting were dealt a blow however by clerk of the course Chris Stickels, who expressed his aim is to start the meeting on ground "as close to good as possible".
Stickels will wait until Saturday morning before planning any further watering after applying 10mm of water to the straight course on Thursday.
Thunderstorms are forecast Friday evening and Stickels said: "We're forecast thunder showers on Friday night, and we're certainly hoping for some - rain would help us.
"We put down approximately 10mm on the straight course today. It's been a dry, warm, and windy day, and the going remains good, good to firm in places."
He added: "After tomorrow night the weather looks like being fine and dry into next week, so we'll wait and see the extent of the showers before making a decision on further watering."
