.....True but in hind sight the SWC and Durban July would never have clashed as I was on course at Clairwood on the 1st Saturday in July 2010 the day that the July was supposed to have been run and no soccer was played in Durban on that day.....I was in Durban a month later trying to get a flight out the night of the Quarter finals Germany game when the "new" airport came to a standstill and was stranded there for 6hrs.....watched the game in the airport lounge...

The July of 1981 was significant for one reason. The Royal Wedding of heir to the throne Prince Charles to the lovely Princess Diana (r.I.p).

The son of Beau Charles named Big Charles entered the history books by winning under a typical polished Jimmy Anderson ride.

Big Charles was trained by Dr.L.F.Naude who had a notorious knack of running his horses well into their old age ten years and above and producing shock results with many of his unfashionably bred horses.

There seems to be less interest in the July especially among the once a year punters, we use to have a Friday braai the day before the July at work with a draw, it was exciting especially for those that only got involved in the July... etc... sadly those days have disappears over the the last few years :(

Anyone else had the same experience or maybe your company still does such events??

Just saw this snippet from last year's Stipes Report:

'An Inquiry will be held into Trainer W Marwing’s behaviour in and around the Boardroom after the running of the 7th Race'

Does anyone know if the inquiry was ever held and what the outcome was ?

R10000 fine R5k suspended

Mr Marwing was charged with a contravention of Rule 72.1.18 in that at Greyville Racecourse after the running of the 7th race on 5 July 2014 (the Vodacom Durban July) and after the result of the objection had been announced inter alia he entered the Boardroom and shouted at those persons present. In so doing he abused, swore at, intimidated and threatened those present, including licensed officials of The National Horseracing Authority.

Mr Marwing pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge.

The Board took into account the extenuating/mitigating circumstances which Mr Marwing presented i.e. his emotional and stressed state and the fact that he was distraught. The Board also took account that Mr Marwing had apologised and was remorseful.

The penalty the Board imposed is a fine of R10 000,00 of which R5 000,00 is suspended on condition that Mr Marwing is not found guilty of a similar offence in the next three years calculated from 22 August 2014.

Mr Marwing has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.

It remains a mystery to this day whether jockey Tom Rattley riding the July favorite the grey Jamaican Music fell off the horse at the 1600mt mark or if he bailed ship payrolled by the " turf accountants ".
The Drill Hall was where the horses went out of view so it was the right place to jump ship if it meant getting the fav beat. :P

1969, Naval Escort romped home a popular winner - with a woman's silk stocking tied around his tongue and lower jaw. The normal brace was ineffective as Naval Escort had an abnormally long tongue. The stocking became regular equipment with all his subsequent runs.

PS - I think Naval Escort may still hold the SA record for the number of successive victories?
