Three jockeys charged with race-fixing
By Nicholas Godfrey 5:24PM 24 JUL 2015

THREE jockeys have been charged with offences relating to race-fixing following a contest at Evangeline Downs in Louisiana last month.

Following an investigation by the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division, brothers Billy and Joe Patin and LeSean Conyers were arrested and charged with "willful pulling of the reins and cheating and swindling".

The Patins, who have been suspended since July 8, were also arrested on warrants for alleged use of a buzzer - a hand-held electronic shock device - during two separate races at Evangeline Downs on July 4.

The main charges stem from a six-horse 7f claimer on June 19 at Evangeline Downs, a minor Louisiana venue near Lafayette, in which Joe Patin finished third on second favourite Powder Road, 17 lengths behind winning favourite Raspberry Delight.

Second place in the $11,000 contest was taken by the longest-priced horse in the field. Billy Patin was fifth on an outsider, while Conyers was last on a horse who trailed throughout. The horses ridden by the three suspects were at least eight lengths behind after two furlongs; Powder Road was third by a nose after finishing 16 and a half lengths behind the runner-up.

The Louisiana Racing Commission lodged a complaint alleging all three had engaged in questionable riding tactics, prompting the investigation that led to their arrest on Thursday.

According to police, investigations have focussed on pari-mutuel wagering on exotic bets. A statement explained: "Through interviews and evidence obtained from track officials, [state police] determined the jockeys wilfully schemed to hold back a horse picked as a favourite to win while utilising an agent to place unusual bets in an attempt to maximise winnings."

Tich what did Mienie do to get such a long suspension
are you at liberty to tell us?
it must have been something very serious?
and do you know what happened of the court case where Khumalo was appealing against his suspension on the Tarry horse?

those are mostly for petty offences like causing interference etc but not for blatantly going no good on a horse ..in fact some of those u have listed like mienie is booked off due to injury and I stand to correction that Kendal mienie is riding somewhere else along with leon govender

let them carry on with the use of watching replays of races over and over and knowing full well how certain jockeys ride you can pick up when a horse is being given a nice and soft ride..wherevers theres money there will always be corruption but our stipes could never put anyone away for it they simply will fail once they get to a court of law if their decision is challenged..
